Writing Superman is therapeutic, but writing Spider-Man is neurotic and natural for Dan Slott

Slott writes both Superman Unlimited for DC and Spectacular Spider-Man at Marvel – and finds them two very distinct experiences

    • Image Comics & Warren Ellis have been developing new comics together since 2023, with Ellis joking back then the publisher was “trapped”
    • Critical Role’s Laura Bailey recorded “almost the whole game” of Dispatch as Blonde Blazer before becoming Invisigal
    • Alex Ross hid a 32-page comic inside Marvel Dimensions, but marketing told him to announce it early

As successful as they are when they team up, Marvel’s Spider-Man and DC’s Superman are very much opposite sides of the superhero coin. Whereas Clark Kent tends to come out on top in most scenarios, poor Peter Parker is often defined by his lovable-loserdom. But for comics veteran Dan Slott, who famously wrote some of the most Spider-Man stories of all time, the characters’ differences are much more personal.

Slott made his assertions during a recent interview with CBR, conducted not long after Marvel revealed that Slott’s Spectacular Spider-Man was transitioning from a 5-issue miniseries to an ongoing title. Slott spoke to returning to the character of Peter Parker after being on DC’s Superman Unlimited ever since May of 2025.

“You know,” began the comic book vet, “Most days I wake up and write Superman, and you feel good about yourself when you write Superman. He loves everyone, and he’s looking out for everybody, and it’s almost therapeutic. But Pete feels more natural. It’s like, ‘Oh, there you go. Oh, my neurotic friend Pete Parker. Look.'”

Just to be clear here, reader – the fact that Slott is back with his friendly neighborhood neurotic pal doesn’t mean he’s hanging up the red cape and blue undies anytime soon. As of this writing, DC has solicited Superman Unlimited to go until at least issue #19, which drops in November of this year. So for the foreseeable future, Slott will just have to be working with his comfort character and his comic book therapy character at the same time.
