With a new set of TV shows and movies landing on Netflix in September, one pattern is that a lot of Canadian talent will be on display. Miku Martineau leads the YA rowing romance series Crew Girl, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan stars in the film Best of the Best, directed by fellow Canadian Lena Khan, and Jacob Tremblay plays Ted Kacyzinski in the upcoming Unabomber movie.
Additionally, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemenwill be back for Season 2 and Ryan Murphy’s Monsteranthology series returns with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.So there’s a lot to be excited about on Netflix in September.
But for anyone raised in the ’90s, it’s going to be a tough reality that the 1995 movie The Baby Sitters Clubwill be leaving Netflix Canada in September. Additionally, 27 Dresses, The Expendablesmovies, Bettlejuice Beetlejuice, Revolutionary Road, Joker: Folie à Deux and Woody Allen’s Small Time Crooks are all leaving the streamer.

The Gentlemen, Season 2 — Sept. 3
Guy Ritchie’s series The Gentlemen returns for Season 2, beginning a year after Eddie (Theo James) and Susie (Kaya Scodelario) first worked together, and now they’re expanding the enterprise. Eddie is thinking about his birthright as the Duke of Halstead as he and Susie head to Italy where Eddie meets “ruthless” Italian crime boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto) and fixer Cico Maldini (Michele Morrone).
“Season 2 was always going to be about Eddie expanding the reach of his criminal empire and testing the relationship Eddie has with Bobby Glass as the person he’s working under,” lead writer and executive producer Matthew Read told Tudum.
Crew Girl — Sept. 10
Filmed in British Columbia, Crew Girl is set to be the next YA hit, starring Miku Martineau, Kyle Clark and Sam Braun. Martineau plays Teagan, a 16-year-old rising rowing star who’s forced to move after a family scandal. Moving with her mom, she has one significant problem at her new school, there isn’t a rowing team for girls, but she takes the role of coxswain of the all-boys crew, and ends up getting stuck in the middle of two competitive rivals, Josh (Braun) and Cam (Clark).
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story — Sept. 17
Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning Monsteranthology series continues with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, starring Ella Beatty as the notorious accused axe murderer. The series also stars Vicky Krieps, Rebecca Hall, Charlie Hunnam, Sarah Paulson, Joey Pollari, Billie Lourd and Jessica Barden.
“I am so excited for viewers to experience our exploration of Lizzie Borden’s story and the questions that her life animates to this day,” Beatty told Tudum.
“It has been a dream come true to investigate this complicated person’s psychology and to examine an American crime that feels almost mythic in proportion. This season gives us our first female Monster and delves into female rage and repression which I’ve found to feel strikingly relevant. I cannot wait to share it with the world.”
Best of the Best — Sept. 18
Canadian Maitreyi Ramakrishnan stars in Best of the Best, directed by Lena Khan, written by Hasan Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam. The film is about childhood best friends, Maya (Ramakrishnan) and Anjali (Priyanka Kedia), who join UCLA’s Bollywood-fusion dance team.
“Best of the Best is a film about sisterhood, friendship, and self-acceptance,” Minhaj told Tudum.
“We thought [Best of the Best] could be a love letter to this seminal moment where many people from the South Asian community go to college, and they have this coming-of-age experience where not only their culture is celebrated, but a specific homage to Bollywood dance is celebrated.”
Unabomber — Sept. 25
Jacob Tremblay plays Ted Kacyzinski in Unabomber, also starring Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley and Annabelle Wallis, directed by Janus Metz.
“Unabomberis a story about a young man who feels increasingly disenfranchised by society and decides to take up violence as a means of revenge,” Metz told Tudum. “We crosscut between two timelines, roughly speaking: the making of the Unabomber and the capture of the Unabomber.”
“I was fascinated by the fact that the hunt for the Unabomber was the FBI’s longest and most expensive operation to date. But what really drew me in was the story about Ted Kaczynski’s years at Harvard when he was a young math student. This was a side to the story I didn’t know about; it helps uncover a very dark chapter in American history.”
