Fall TV is back in a big way. September is packed with TV premieres, with something noteworthy being released just about every day this month. (You can check our September TV calendar highlights at the bottom of this guide if you don’t believe us.) Shows returning in September include Glen Powell’s sports comedy Chad Powers, Peacock’s The Office spin-off The Paper, and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, while franchises like Ryan Murphy’s Monster and the Alan Cumming-hosted The Traitors are returning in different forms. New series premiering in September include the Reacher spin-off Neagley, the Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson comedy Brothers, and Sharon Horgan’s latest HBO series Youth.

The best shows to watch in September

Chad Powers Season 2 (Sept. 3, Hulu)

Just in time for football season, the only fake quarterback on TV inspired by an Eli Manning sketch character is back. Glen Powell’s Russ Holliday, a disgraced college football phenom who conned his way into a second chance in Season 1 by disguising himself as walk-on Chad Powers, is a star on the field heading into Season 2, but off the field, his bizarre ruse is in danger of falling apart. If Russ is going to fend off suspicions and lead the Catfish to the playoffs, he’s going to need Ricky’s (Perry Mattfeld) help — but Ricky, who’s still reeling from learning Russ’ secret, isn’t eager to give it to him. The Gentlemen Season 2 (Sept. 3, Netflix)

The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie’s series spin-off of his own 2019 film, just made headlines because, per The Hollywood Reporter, Meghan Markle is “in advanced discussions” to join the action comedy in a still-unannounced third season. But let’s talk about the second season first. Neagley (Sept. 16, Prime Video)

Jack Reacher’s pal Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) has made the most appearances after the big guy himself in the hit series Reacher, which is known for its rotating cast and self-contained arcs each season, but she’s been dearly missed in the currently airing Season 4. That’s because she’s been too busy with her own spin-off show, which focuses on her off-the-books investigation into the mysterious death of a family friend in Chicago. You can expect some similarities to Reacher — action, cops who can’t seem to cuff our hero vigilantes, and dad show plotting — and even an appearance from Reacher (Alan Ritchson) himself, though he probably won’t get as much screen time as you’d hope. – Tim Surette [Trailer]

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story (Sept. 17, Netflix)

In its first three seasons, Monster — the biographical crime drama from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan — told the stories of Jeffrey Dahmer, Lyle and Erik Menendez, and Ed Gein. The upcoming fourth installment features the anthology’s first female “monster,” Lizzie Borden, who was accused of the ax murders of her father and stepmother in 1892. The Traitors: New Blood (Sept. 17, NBC)

It’s time to head back to the roundtable, because a new group of Traitors are out for blood in The Traitors: New Blood. The latest installment of the competition reality series features no Survivor castaways, Big Brother houseguests, nor housewives from The Real Housewives. It doesn’t even mix celebrities and civilians, as was the strategy in the show’s first season. Rather, 22 “everyday Americans” enter Alan Cumming’s castle in the Scottish Highlands for a game of mafia on steroids. Every contestant has the opportunity to win up to $250,000: The Traitors must keep their identities hidden as they “murder” a Faithful each week, while the Faithfuls must identify and banish them from the castle. – Kat Moon [Trailer]

Youth (Sept. 20, HBO)

In this house, we love and support Sharon Horgan, which means that we’re keeping an eye on Youth, her latest comedy series. Here, Horgan plays Alex, a 50-year-old divorcée grappling with getting older while simultaneously trying to get her sexual groove back, take care of her ailing parents, and push her son toward adulthood. – Allison Picurro [Trailer]

Brothers (Sept. 23, Apple TV)

Brothers is a show that dares to ask, “What if Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were biological brothers?” I’m not sure why you would need more information than that, but here are some more details if that is in fact the case: The True Detectiveco-stars play fictionalized versions of themselves in this comedy that finds the two moving in together with their families and discovering that they might actually be, you guessed it, biological brothers. A handful of Netflix’s biggest hits are coming back this back-to-school season. More than two years after it first premiered, Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is returning for Season 2, which finds Theo James’ Eddie and Kaya Scodelario’s Susie determined to grow their criminal empire even if it means going to war with the Italian mafia. Another hugely successful Netflix franchise, Ryan Murphy’s Monster, also returns this September, with its latest installment focusing on the notorious ax murder suspect Lizzie Borden. HBO Max’s best new shows and movies in September

HBO’s offerings this September couldn’t possibly be any different from each other. In terms of new TV, Sharon Horgan’s latest comedy series Youth follows a 50-year-old divorcée trying to figure it all out, while Rick Rubin’s Jay-Z-focused docuseries, JAŸ-Z in 8, deep dives into the rapper’s decades-long career. And if none of that interests you, new episodes of Lanterns drop every Sunday. The biggest movie to come to HBO Max this month is undoubtedly Kane Parsons’ indie horror hit Backrooms, though Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James’ action movie Fuze also arrives on the platform in September. Hulu’s best new shows and movies in September

Nothing says fall TV like a private eye taking odd jobs and a celebrity doing the samba. ABC’s RJ Decker and Dancing with the Stars are back to usher in the fall TV season this September on Hulu; each show’s season premiere hits the streamer on Sept. 15, the day after debuting on ABC. The month kicks off on Sept. 3 with Glen Powell’s Hulu original Chad Powers, a show that’s also very appropriate for fall because it’s about football and wearing a weird mask. Plus, FX’s Snowfall spin-off The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres Sept. 8, and the lucky 13th season of American Horror Story creeps into the picture on Sept. 24. It’s never too early to start getting in the Halloween mindset. On the movies side, a pair of recent Oscar nominees — Wicked and A Complete Unknown — are the highlights. Amazon Prime Video’s best new shows and movies in September

Reacher is big, but in September, it’s getting bigger. Prime Video is heading into the fall TV season with a strategy that broadcast networks have used for years: Make a splash by introducing a new show that’s spun off from one of your biggest hits. The big new release for Prime Video this month is Neagley, which focuses on Reacher side character Frances Neagley in an all-new adventure. And don’t worry, Reacher will be dropping by for a bit to help launch the show. Beyond Neagley, there’s the MGM+ original series American Classic, starring Kevin Kline as a Broadway star who returns home to put on a play; the return of Thursday Night Football; and the excellent 2014 animated limited series Over the Garden Wall. Peacock’s new shows and movies in September

Stop the presses; The Paper is printing new issues. After debuting on Peacock last fall and picking up more viewers with a run on NBC over the winter, the spin-off of The Office returns for Season 2, which finds the staff at the Toledo Truth Teller searching for another win after a big night at the Ohio Journalism Awards. The full season drops Sept. 9. You can follow up your stay in Toledo with a trip to the Scottish Highlands: The Traitors: New Blood, a new civilian version of the cutthroat reality competition The Traitors, makes its Peacock premiere on Sept. 18, a day after its NBC debut. And the new drama Line of Fire hits the streamer on Sept. 22, following its NBC premiere on Sept. 21. The series, which stars Peter Krause and Hope Davis, focuses on a family of law enforcement agents as they unravel a dangerous conspiracy. Welcome back, fall TV! Paramount+’s new shows and movies in September

It’s time to report to the break room for a farewell party: Colin From Accounts is punching out for the last time. The third and final season of the acclaimed Australian romantic comedy hits Paramount+ on Sept. 10. Colin From Accounts, you will be missed! The other highlight of Paramount+’s September lineup is Season 2 of the crime drama MobLand, starring Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan, which premieres Sept. 18. And unlike Colin, which will release its full season at once, MobLand is streaming weekly, with new episodes debuting on Fridays. The month kicks off with the new Martin spin-off The Varnell Hill Show, premiering Sept. 1. Starring Tommy Davidson and executive produced by Martin Lawrence, the series is set behind the scenes of the fictional long-running talk show hosted by Davidson’s Varnell Hill. That’s followed on Sept. 16 by an animated TV adaptation of the Golden Axe video game franchise, featuring a voice cast led by Matthew Rhys, Lisa Gilroy, and Liam McIntyre.
