Mel Gibson needed only a few seconds onstage to ignite another controversy-and this time, the Oscar-winning filmmaker is admitting that his behavior was idiotic.
The Braveheart star, 70, came under fire after footage from Fan Expo Canada appeared to show him mimicking an American Sign Language interpreter during his entrance at a question-and-answer panel in Toronto on Saturday, August 29.
As the interpreter signed Gibson’s introduction for deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members, the actor emerged from behind a curtain, waved to the crowd and then performed a series of exaggerated hand movements behind her. He subsequently pointed toward the audience before taking his seat.
The brief moment quickly went viral, with critics accusing Gibson of mocking the interpreter as she performed an essential accessibility service. Some social media users described the gesture as “despicable,” “gross” and “casually cruel,” while others questioned why the actor felt the need to imitate someone who was simply doing her job.
Gibson has now apologized-but even his statement is raising eyebrows.
“Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed,” he told Page Six.
“There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it,” he added.
The apology confirms that the strange movements were not simply instructions directed toward production workers, as some defenders had suggested. Gibson acknowledges that his behavior was thoughtless, although he maintains that he never intended to ridicule or hurt anyone.
That distinction has done little to calm the growing argument online. Critics say intention does not erase the impact of publicly imitating an interpreter, particularly when the interpreter was providing access for people who otherwise might not have been able to follow the event.
Others have defended Gibson, characterizing the moment as an ill-judged attempt at humor rather than deliberate cruelty. A handful of supporters even praised him as a provocateur refusing to bow to online outrage.
Unfortunately for Gibson, the incident does not exist in a vacuum. His history of offensive public remarks has left many viewers unwilling to give him the benefit of the doubt.
The filmmaker previously apologized following an antisemitic rant during a 2006 drunk-driving arrest. Racist and misogynistic remarks attributed to him also emerged in recordings connected to his former relationship with Oksana Grigorieva. Gibson argued that those recordings had been edited and taken from an intensely heated private dispute.
Winona Ryder has also alleged that Gibson made antisemitic and homophobic remarks at a Hollywood gathering, accusations his representative has denied.
As a result, what might have been dismissed as a few seconds of foolish behavior from another celebrity has reopened a much larger conversation about Gibson’s public image-and whether his repeated apologies have ever been matched by sufficient change.
The timing is especially awkward because Gibson is preparing to return to the biblical world that produced one of his biggest commercial successes. During the Fan Expo panel, he discussed The Resurrection of the Christ, his long-awaited follow-up to the 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.
The project is being divided into two films. According to People, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is scheduled for May 6, 2027, with Part Two following on May 25, 2028.
That connection has made the controversy particularly uncomfortable for Christian observers. Gibson is preparing to present the story of Christ’s resurrection-a message grounded in love, dignity and redemption-while being criticized for appearing to belittle someone providing access to members of the deaf community.
The incident also highlights the vital role of ASL interpreters at large public events. Their work is not an amusing sideshow or a performance to imitate; it allows deaf and hard-of-hearing attendees to participate in the same experience as everyone else.
Gibson has at least acknowledged that his behavior was wrong and offered an apology. Whether audiences accept it is another question entirely.
For now, the internet has rendered its own divided verdict. Some see an impulsive joke that went badly wrong. Others see another revealing moment from a star whose controversial past continues to follow him into every new chapter.
Either way, Gibson’s own phrase may become the line that defines the scandal: “spontaneous thoughtless idiocy.”
