Despite many pledges and attempts to fix the situation, it seems near impossible to stop scalpers from gobbling up the latest Pokémon TCG releases. This issue has only grown with each passing year, and the patience of regular customers is wearing thing. That’s why Walmart is stepping in to try out their own solution.
Walmart has announced a “Collectibles Drawing” system for purchasing Pokémon TCG cards, and this basically amounts to a lottery, which is an approach we’ve seen many retailers in Japan use. Walmart customers can sign up for the drawing, and then Walmart will randomly select “winners.” Being a winner means you’ll then have access to purchasing the Pokémon TCG product you want.
Of course, Walmart knows just how much product they have to work with, and that will all be factored into the lottery system before it goes live. Those who sign up for the lottery can also authorize Walmart to automatically place an order for them, further streamlining the process. Should it all goes as planned, this seems like a fantastic way to squash scalpers and make things much less of a headache for genuine customers.
