The Marvel Ultimate Universe went a long way in updating heroes for a new generation of younger readers. The entire purpose of the comic book line was to modernize the origin stories, simplify the history of the characters, and offer new readers a jumping-on point to start new series without needing to do too much homework to catch up. That said, when working to modernize a series and origin, a lot has to change because these books came out in the 21st century, while many heroes started their runs in the 1960s. In the most recent update of the Ultimate Universe, manipulated by the Maker, the origin changes were even more drastic.

From heroes who didn’t get their powers until much later to good guys who now serve as antagonists, here is a look at seven popular Marvel heroes who are almost unrecognizable in the Ultimate Universe.
7) Colossus’s Family Rules Russia
In the Maker’s version of the Ultimate Universe, the Rasputins are the ruling tsars of Russia and Limbo. This is a very different version of Colossus, who has been one of the most gentle and kind heroes in Marvel Comics for years. Here, he sits on the Maker’s Council and is a major villain in the Ultimate Universe. Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red sit on the Maker’s Council and control the area formerly known as Russia. Here, the family created Directorate X, which turned mutants into weapons to defend their country. This produced the Winter Soldier version of Wolverine.
This reinvention plays out across Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Wolverine, where the Rasputins are power brokers and villains rather than X-Men teammates. Even in the original Ultimate Universe, Colossus was different, as he was a weapons runner for the Russian Red Mafia. Both of these matter because Colossus is tied to crime in the Ultimate Universe, whereas he was a wholesome farm boy in the main Earth-616 timeline.
In the Maker’s new Ultimate Universe, Hulk is also a villain rather than a hero. Bruce Banner worked as part of the Maker’s Council, and he was a major enemy of the Ultimates in this timeline. In this world, the Maker was too late to stop Banner’s gamma accident, so he recruited him to work for him in that world. This caused Hulk to found a pacifist cult called the Children of Eternal Light, which he then ruled in K’un-Lun.
However, the cult was a front for Hulk, who was conducting cruel experiments that irradiated large parts of the world. He was responsible for the gamma testing that created Gamma Island, which introduced a new version of She-Hulk in this world. This all paid off when Hulk was the first major threat to the Ultimates, and it almost looked like he had killed Iron Lad in their ultimate confrontation. The regular Hulk just wants to be left alone, but this version created his own cult and used fake pacifism to take fascist control.
5) Wolverine is the Winter Soldier
As mentioned, it was Colossus’s family and the Directorate X institute that turned Wolverine into the Winter Soldier. Ultimate Wolverine #1 (2025) by Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio turned Wolverine into a mind-wiped mutant assassin who served the Maker’s Council. He specifically serves as the weapon used by Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. They gave Logan his adamantium skeleton and turned him into a controllable killing machine against the mutant resistance.
Bucky Barnes is the Winter Soldier on Earth-616, while Wolverine worked for the Canadian government before moving on to become a member of the X-Men. That makes this version entirely unrecognizable in both characters’ existences. It turned Wolverine into a brainwashed assassin for a foreign power, and it merged the two different Earth-616 characters into one unstoppable machine. To make things worse, this Wolverine murdered Mystique and Nightcrawler in his first appearance, showing that he was a very different mutant than the Earth-616 hero.
4) Black Panther Defends Africa From Egyptian Gods
Black Panther is still the king of Wakanda in the Maker’s Ultimate Universe. However, he is at war with two gods to protect his nation. T’Challa’s Wakanda is in an open war against Ra and Khonshu, who were working together as Moon Knight. These two gods had claimed the Upper and Lower Kingdoms across northeastern Africa. Like most major villains in this universe, Ra and Khonshu both serve as members of the Maker’s Council, and Moon Knight is not a vigilante but an organization of high-tech soldiers who kill for the two gods.
The inciting incident came when T’Chaka saved his son, T’Challa, from suicide bombers sent by Ra and Khonshu and died in the blast. This caused T’Challa to declare war. In Earth-661, Khonshu is a patron deity, and Black Panther’s main villains are usurpers. In this Ultimate Universe reinvention, Khonshu and Ra are imperialist warlords who want to conquer Africa, forcing T’Challa to step up as its defender. He led a guerrilla war against overwhelming forces. This series also reinvented Vibranium from a metal into something alive that could bond to T’Challa like a symbiote.
3) Reed Richards is Doctor Doom
One of the most shocking changes in the Ultimate Universe came when the Fantastic Four’s origin changed to kill three of the four, with Reed Richards the sole survivor. The Maker took his Earth-6160 variant and tortured him for years, placing an iron mask on him and trying to break him. His goal was to turn Reed into Doctor Doom, but what the Maker didn’t expect was that Reed would become Doctor Doom, but as a hero and not a villain.
On Earth-616, Reed Richards and Doctor Doom are eternal enemies, a selfless hero taking on an arrogant tyrant. Here, instead of Reed fighting Doom, he became Doom, reinventing the character as a tortured man. Reed blamed himself for the deaths of Johnny Storm, Sue Storm, and Ben Grimm, and he, in turn, chose to help start the Ultimates and lead the rebellion against the Maker. Doctor Doom teamed with Iron Lad to bring down the world’s ultimate villain.
2) Tony Stark is Iron Lad
In the Ultimate Universe, Howard Stark was still around and was seemingly killed while he was attempting to stop the Maker and Kang, who had turned the world into a fascist dictatorship that the Maker controlled. In this world, Tony Stark was a young man who took on the role of Iron Lad to carry on his father’s heroic legacy. This Iron Man is drastically different from the Earth-616 version, although both are great heroes in their own right.
On Earth-616, Stark is a jaded billionaire who was scarred by his previous captivity and fights as an often arrogant hero. In the Ultimate Universe, Tony was not cynical at all and was a hopeful teenager who wanted to become a great hero like his father. While the name he uses once belonged to a young version of Kang, Iron Lad here was a force of good, and he led the Ultimates into a war that would eventually start to bring down the Maker’s forces. Iron Lad’s main mission is to travel through time and set up moments that would help recreate the stolen heroes that the Maker took away from the world.
1) Spider-Man is a Married Father
One of the heroes that the Maker made disappear was Spider-Man when he stopped Peter Parker from getting bitten by the radioactive spider. Instead, Parker just grew into an adult as a civilian and ended up marrying Mary Jane Watson, and they had two kids, Richard and May. Peter is no longer a teenager in this world, and he is a middle-aged man, a married father who is just living with his family and with no idea that he was supposed to be a superhero.
This all changed when Iron Lad began to set up things throughout time to ensure that the heroes who were supposed to exist would finally happen. The big shock here was that Peter and Mary Jane were married with children, since he was stripped of this by Mephisto on Earth-616. Uncle Ben is also alive here since he never experienced the incident that happened in Spider-Man’s original origin. In this world, Tony sent Peter a genetic catalyst, and Peter chose to get bitten and become Spider-Man. The big change is that he chooses this life rather than a kid who received powers without understanding why.
