House of the Dragon season 3 just came to an end on HBO with an epic finale, and now, fans of the hit series based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Bloodare looking at a two-year wait until season 4 premieres. Luckily, there are some incredible TV shows to watch to, hopefully, make that wait feel a little bit shorter.
It’s always a bummer when a show as good as House of the Dragon ends a season. We all need a new fantasy show to scratch that itch, but the options are usually quite limited. Fantasy TV is a tough genre because there are so many shows that take really ambitious swings and often miss the mark or have their run ended a little bit, or a lot, earlier than planned.
With that said, there are still a bunch of fantasy shows I’ve seen that I’d recommend toHouse of the Dragon fans immediately after the third season ended. Let’s get the list started with the next fantasy show coming soon!
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Behind House of the Dragonand A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Poweris the next best current fantasy series. It’s definitely a step below HBO’s hit shows, but it’s pretty, expensive, and features great performances.
The Rings of Power tells the story of Sauron’s rise in Middle-earth and the alliance of elves, men, and dwarves who band together to try to stop the Dark Lord. This all happens long before the quests of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. In the first two seasons, we watched Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) try to stop Sauron’s rise, but the Dark Lord is inevitable.
The Rings of Powerseason 3premieres on Nov. 11 on Prime Video. It’s a few months away, so we’re likely going to be fantasy-less until then on the TV side, but we have a few weeks of Rings of Powerto look forward to.
Prime Video is trying a new release strategy with Rings of Power season 3. We’re getting four episodes on the premiere date, followed by two episodes on Nov. 18, and then the final two episodes of the season on Nov. 25.
The Witcher

The Witcheris one of the most successful fantasy book series and video games in history, so it made a lot of sense for Netflix to take a stab at adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s stories in TV series. Henry Cavill starred in the first three seasons of the series as Geralt of Ri
In the series, Geralt is pulled into a civil war on the Continent when he becomes responsible for Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) after she escaped Cintra during an attack by Nilfgaard.
After the third season, Liam Hemsworth took over the lead role for Cavill, who left the series.The Witcherseason 4 premiered on Netflix in the fall of 2025.
The Witcher is coming back for one more season on Netflix, but we just learned that The Witcherseason 5has been pushed back to 2027. This is quite surprising since the series has been done filming for quite a while. The final season was expected to arrive later this year, but that’s not happening anymore.
The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Timeis one of my favorite fantasy shows of all time. The series is based on Robert Jordan’s book series of the same name. It premiered on Prime Video back in 2021, and it ran for three seasons through 2025, when Prime Video canceled the hit series.
The series from Rafe Judkins tells the story of five people from a small village who are believed to be the Dragon Reborn, the one with the potential to be the most powerful person in the lands who can go toe-to-toe with the Dark One in the Last Battle.
The Wheel of Timenever got the chance to truly spread its wings and fly like Sheepstealer in House of the Dragonseason 3. Prime Video decided to stop it just as it was getting good. It’s such a bummer because it’s an amazing series with an amazing cast. You’ll love Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Madeleine Madden, Kate Fleetwood, Natasha O’Keeffe, Marcus Rutherfod, and more.
Black Sails
- Seasons: 4
- Where to watch: Starz
Black Sails is the first non-fantasy series on the list. It’s more of a historical drama about the glory days of the pirates, but it’s still really fun, brutal, scandalous, and political like House of the Dragon. I think a lot of House of the Dragon fans would absolutely love this series.
Black Sails premiered on Starz in 2014 and ran for four seasons through 2017. The series tells the story of Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his quest to find various treasures in the 1700s.
Right now, you can watch all four seasons of Black Sailson Starz, but you can also check out the series for free on Sling TV and Plex if you have access. If you love pirates, this is the show for you!
The Last Kingdom

We have another historical drama up next in The Last Kingdom!The Netflix original series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories,which tell the stories of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, an Anglo-Saxon who is raised by the Danes. The series follows Uhtred throughout his life. He’s a part of a lot of key moments and conflicts that set the course for England to become a proper country.
There are five seasons of The Last Kingdomon Netflix. The series started on BBC before moving to Netflix. We also have a standalone movie,The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die,that caps off this story.
Alexander Dreymon is fantastic as Uhtred in this series. I absolutely love his performance and the series as a whole. If you love the backstabbing, epic battles, and political intrigue of House of the Dragon,you can’t go wrong with The Last Kingdom.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

We can’t have a list of shows like House of the Dragon without the two shows that are set in the same universe. If for some reason you haven’t seenA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms yet and you’re a fan of House of the Dragon, you need to change that immediately.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set about 100 years after the events ofHouse of the Dragon.It follows a hedge knight, Ser Dunk the Tall (Peter Claffey), during his time competing in a tournament when he takes a young stableboy, Egg (Dexter Sol-Ansell), as his squire.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about theTales of Dunk and Egg. So far, we’ve only seen one season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,though the show just premiered in January 2026. Season 2 will arrive sometime early next year, but Ira Parker’s series has had some major delays that could push that back a little bit.

Game of Thrones

It feels fitting to end the list with Game of Thrones, so that’s just what I’m going to do.Game of Thrones is, of course, the series based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. It’s the series that kicked all this madness with the dragons.
The series follows several king characters when another civil war starts and divides Westeros. While that’s all happening, the long-lost heir to the Iron Throne, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), rises from the ashes with three dragons, and she’s coming to take what is rightfully hers.
There are eight seasons of Game of Throneson HBO and HBO Max. If you just watched House of the Dragon, it’s the perfect time for a Game of Thrones rewatch.
