5 Things from the Netflix GTA6 Gameplay Reveal that SUCKED

    hello world!

We have finally seen gameplay from the upcoming release of the first Rockstar Games title in eight years, Grand Theft Auto VI. What will surely be the biggest entertainment release of all time has at last had a public showing, despite the obscene number of pre-orders that have already been placed. Well, at least official showings, because the last few weeks have been littered with leaks. Unfortunately for the team, those snippets released on twitter didn’t show it off in the way they would have liked, but that’s where Netflix comes in.

After a crapload of money was thrown at them.

Regardless of the buzz and the initial “WOW! THIS IS SOOOOO AWESOME! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS 10/10 MASTERPIECE THAT I HAVEN’T EVEN PLAYED YET!”, there were also some things that kinda sucked. The game sure looks expensive, and congratulations to Rockstar for developing an engaging game that may or may not have crashed Netflix, but GTA VI should not be immune from criticism – no game should – so let’s talk about the things that should have been rethought, or at least not be blindly praised like Rockstar can do no wrong. Not everything is rosy in the garden. Here are the 5 worst things from the Netflix Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look which lasted for 26 whole minutes.

    I Can’t See Anything

    Where’s the brightness settings?

You know that moment in a lot of games before you begin playing where you need to manoeuvre the lighting so that the picture on the left is barely visible? Throw that out of the f*cking window. I legitimately could not see anything on screen in some of the scenes. There’s realistic lighting and then there’s lighting that’s purposely obscuring for no reason. When we met Booby, I could not even make out his features. What’s the point of great facial models if you can’t see any of their expressions? It sucks.

Then there’s the driving conditions at night. Sure, realistic lighting looks great if you’re watching a film or TV show (as long as you have no glare on your TV). I hate driving at night in real life, so I don’t want to drive in pitch black where you have to rely solely on ambient lighting or headlights. That’s the quickest way to make me want to just wait for daytime. I’m not saying anything looks bad; just give me a beautiful game world that I can see over one that I can’t.

    Driving

Should we park up and walk?

I’ve said in the past that I hated driving in GTA V. I’ve disliked it in Rockstar Games since GTA IV, where I would legitimately take taxis everywhere. The Netflix Enhanced Look did nothing to persuade me that things will be different. It still looks too simmy, and that’s not fun. Take me back to the more arcade-y fun of the older games where you could just zoom around and crash with little penalty except being closer to blowing up. I can’t be bothered with parts of the vehicle being destroyed and making it even harder to drive.

    Are We Still Doing Stickups?

Grand Theft Auto V lost me. I played maybe 10 hours, completing the first heist with Trevor, Michael and Franklin. It was pretty fun to prepare for that heist in the missions leading up to that, and then pull off the big one. Then the story continued and we began planning the next one, and so I was done. I wasn’t about that gameplay, so I’m absolutely the most unhyped by the types of missions we saw in the Netflix enhanced look.

We saw random convenience store, jewellery store, and bank hold-ups. The frequency of Jason and Lucia going into shops with a mask on and just stealing stuff was so flipping boring. I’m sure this is some people’s jam, but it’s seriously snoozeville.

    Movement

    Can you move slower?

Movement in Rockstar games has been pretty bad since GTA IV. The opportunity to ragdoll is very, very likely, but more than that, characters handle like canal barges. Once they are at full speed, they move ok, but at a slower speed it’s excruciating. You can see during the shootout scene, which is supposed to feel like Die Hard, that Jason is just wandering around without a care in the world, slowly walking down corridors. It’s a good job whoever is playing the game is decent at headshots, otherwise it would be pretty difficult to dodge out of the way of any incoming danger.

I’m not good at headshots, and I’d hoped that Rockstar would have finally improved something that has held them back for years. In previews, there are reports of being able to change walk speed, but why not show that? Maybe because it doesn’t actually improve things one bit, but we will have to wait and see.

    It’s more GTA, I guess

How many surprises did you take away from the Netflix presentation? It is a dual protagonist, just like V was triple protagonist. The environments look very impressive, and the city feels lived in. And you can do crime and sh*t. That’s what we expected. Similarly, there seems to be kooky NPCs that you can run into, just like any other Rockstar game. No surprises there, then.

Previews also suggest that the map will be THREE TIMES the size of RDR2. That’s too big, but it’s also, that’s right, not surprising. Maybe I’m jaded, but this was exactly what I assumed this presentation was going to be, and it simply whelmed me.

Bonus: F*ck Simulation Mechanics (Taken From Previews)

Why is Rockstar hiding the simulation stuff from the general public? They can’t be ashamed of it because they put it in the game. Yes, you have to sleep or else you’ll be debuffed. Yes, you may have to fill up your car with gas. Yes, you have to work out or run to keep your physical attributes at an optimum level. Your Jason and Lucia might break up, so you have to keep your relationship levels high. All of this stuff – the kind of things that turned me off Red Dead Redemption 2 – sucks balls. Grand Theft Auto is supposed to be a fun playground, and this just isn’t. Stop making me do things I don’t want to do in real life. Be better.

Call me a hater, but those are things that sucked about GTA VI Netflix Extended Look. What are your thoughts? What are you actually excited for? Is it doing more heists? Let me know in the comments.
