Horror movies are unique in that a couple can be completely original and seem like they’re based on something, and others are based on something and become definitive, like the Universal Classic Monsters. Before the TV show of the same name changed horror television forever, Tales From the Crypt (1972) was an anthology film about a group of people who meet the Crypt Keeper, who recounts how they will die before we see it happen in various segments.
The film itself didn’t have the same effect as the TV show, but fans of horror anthologies would be missing out if they didn’t see this film. Adapting EC Comics books like Tales From the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, this film was a great horror flick based on a comic no one had heard of.
The Crow (1994) is one of the most iconic supernatural thrillers. While it’s often associated with the horror genre, it’s always been more adjacent, as it’s set on Halloween and follows a man avenging the deaths of himself and his girlfriend on Devil’s Night.
Unfortunately, this film gained attention because it was the final film of Brandon Lee, who was killed on set. But the story was also based on the graphic novel by James O’Barr, who told it to cope with the death of his girlfriend. The Crow is a powerful, dark film, pioneering gothic film, music, and style, and the comic is even more intense.

The story of Jack the Ripper remains one of the most famous in true-crime history because we never learned who the killer was, or whether there was even one killer at all. From Hell (2001) capitalizes on the mystery and follows a detective and a prostitute trying to solve the crimes while simultaneously trying to keep her safe from Jack the Ripper.
The film was based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell and manages to be a great, tense film that doesn’t hold back on the violence as it explores the riveting mystery. Alan Moore may be famous for many stories, but there’s no denying that From Hell is one of his scariest creations.

When it comes to vampire movies, very few capture the animalistic brutality of 30 Days of Night (2007), which follows a town in Alaska that remains dark for a month as a clan of vampires hunts down the people of the town to eat and survive. What makes the film so scary, though, is how the effects make the vampires look human when they act like anything but.
The film is based on the comic miniseries of the same name by Steve Niles; the art stood out in the series for its unsettling use of color, and the film captures this perfectly. There’s no denying how scary 30 Days of Night is, but it’s the comic that informed the fear we see in the movie.
