There are only a few games that everyone in the world has heard of regardless of gender, age, race, origin, or background. Pac-Man has got to be on the short list of games that qualify for this significant recognition, right? That little yellow dude . . . er . . . mouth . . . um . . . thing or whatever it is simply stands out from the crowd no matter where you are in the world.
Pac-Man is 46 years old this month, and it’s still one of the most fun things you can do with a controller or a joystick. The simplicity of controlling a protagonist that has to eat up a bunch of little bits while avoiding enemies is something that seems so mundane in concept that it’s hard to believe it became so beloved.
At the same time, video games were once considered a strange hobby. Communicating clearly with an audience so they understand what they need to do to win takes something that isn’t complex. The best video games are intuitive, precise, yet forgiving in all the right ways. They’re addictive, encouraging of more tries, and palatable.
$15 billion in revenue and 91 million units sold overall amongst all of the Pac-Man games shows that the original concept is timeless and genius. Namco is still benefiting from this game and the franchise at large in a way that Nintendo is with Mario.
Bitvint ranked the game the number one arcade title of all time and said “Pac-Man transcended the arcade scene to become a cultural symbol, beloved by millions around the globe. The game’s simple yet engaging mechanics, charming characters, and universal appeal have secured its place as a cornerstone of the gaming world.”
What is your favorite Pac-Man memory? Not many games are so special that they’ve been enjoyed by your grandparents and your children, but Pac-Man is the unique case where that’s true. It will probably still be popular in another 46 years.
