As always, these YvoCaro Plays articles are mainly about the video games I’m currently playing, and this time I want to talk to you about Go-Go Town!. Although the game works well on the Steam Deck, what made me buy it was the game coming to my favourite handheld, the Nintendo Switch, last week. So, time for me to jump in!

And if you like these bits of gaming thoughts, you can find the previous ones here.

Complete Version After Two Years of Hard Work

Over here at LadiesGamers, we have followed Go-Go Town! since the very start. Back in the Spring of 2023, I tried a demo on Steam for a game that sounded promising, which was called Go-Go Town!,of course. The first reason it caught my attention was that it was made by Prideful Sloth, a studio that makes games that suit me, like Grow: Song of the Evertree and Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles. The second reason is that the game looks colourful, cute and goofy, and it’s got gameplay that appeals to me. Go-Go Town! is a city builder and management sim.

Prideful Sloth has been diligently building on their early access game that released on Steam in June 2024. It was already good when it started its run, as Margaret wrote about in her review. Still, I hadn’t anticipated is the passion with which I am diving in now. I even have trouble putting it down; it’s got me hooked! And those kind of games come along only a couple of times over the entire year for me, so I cherish it.

Since then, in the past two years, they have tweaked, worked on QOL elements and added tons of content. So for me, buying the final version now really paid off big time, as I have hardly any complaints. And looking at the future, the Australian developer isn’t done yet with Go-Go Town, as more additions are coming.

    Mayor YvoCaro

I’m the mayor of my little town, and I’m in charge of building it up and attracting tourists.

The big boss sells it well, making it all about fame and the wonderful feeling of achieving something, but in reality I’m making sure they turn a big profit. Sounds like Tom Nook, but I can forgive them as the humour in the little phone calls and other texts is great!

When you start out, there is so much to do that you wonder how you are going to handle it all. But I have an unending supply of stamina, and even though I have a little house that I can decorate, it’s all for show. My little YvoCaro doesn’t need to sleep, eat or otherwise rest. Frankly, she’s one energy drink away from becoming a productivity influencer. She can race around town all day and night, making sure materials keep on coming, items are manufactured, and shops are stocked. And at first, it’s hard work to keep it all going, and then, when the ghastly Garbirds swoop into town and treat my carefully planned tourist district like an all-you-can-trash buffet, it’s a bit annoying.

Soon, though, I got to hire workers. Persuading tourists to come and live in my town, I quickly put them to work. Plus, they don’t need any pay! I’m beginning to suspect my town’s economy may not survive a visit from the labour inspector!

The first ones started out with simple jobs as miners, lumberjacks, or fishers, supplying my most basic shops with goods to sell. And soon I had to make sure it’s a well-oiled machine that doesn’t fail to give tourists nourishment, both of the real kind and of the kind that entertains them.

    Service Workers and Couriers

In all of this, I was so happy when I unlocked my Service Workers in the Maintenance Office! They truly make the gameplay more enjoyable and quickly became my favourite employees, taking care of the garbage that they bring to the disposal site. With their Bubble Gun, they also clean up the mess tourists make and leave me free to focus on setting up the perfect logistics system. Even though they aren’t always on the ball, I can’t fault them. It is a huge town by now after all!

So there I was, making sure all the shops had the stock to make the recipes that suited their theme. Potatoes, fish and paper to make sure the Fish ‘n Chips shop could make their famous ( I think….) fish and chips. Or yum grease and crabs to make their seafood sticks. But potatoes have to be planted and harvested. The paper has to be made from the wood the lumberjacks bring in. Crabs have to be caught in crab pots, and yum grease has to be made in the seafood converter, for which you need to fish for Deep Sea Cutlet.

So you see, one leads to another, and before I knew it I had a veritable production line going, the kind that reminds you why spreadsheets were invented. At some point I stopped running a cosy town and started supervising a tiny capitalist empire. And having a wonderful time doing it!

And remember, this is just one shop making dishes with two recipes. Imagine a town full of all kinds of shops, vending machines and market stalls.

It’s fun keeping it all going, but by the time I unlocked the Courier Building, I was more excited than any reasonable mayor should be about logistics! Now I could just focus on ensuring there were enough production machines to produce all the items needed for the shops.

    Pouring Some Creativity in There

I’m working on that now, making a residential area for all the workers who join the town. And I think I’m just about ready to beautify the town too; I haven’t done much of that yet. Don’t want the workers to run away in discontent, right? As it turns out, even citizens who work for free appreciate a pleasant neighbourhood.

Just be warned when you think about picking upGo-Go Town! Why? Because every time I think I’m finished for the night, I spot one more thing that could be improved. It’s a dangerous game. Not for the town, mind you. For my beauty sleep!
