YouTube content creator HeavyDSparks and his team said they uncovered thousands of dollars’ worth of tools, equipment and collectibles after purchasing a mystery storage unit and a semi-trailer filled with miscellaneous freight.
The purchase began after the creator received an email from a seller offering the contents of a storage unit in Utah along with old dry-van trailer containing additional items. The team said they spent between $2,500 and $3,000 on the combined purchase before traveling to inspect the storage unit.
The creators explained that buying storage units comes with risks because buyers are responsible for removing everything from the unit or risk being banned from future auctions.
They also said storage facilities typically provide only a limited number of photos before a unit is sold, leaving much of its contents unknown until the door is opened.
Tools, Collectibles Among Early DiscoveriesÂ
As the team sorted through the storage unit, they found hand tools, power tools, car audio installation equipment, garden tools and other household items.
During the search, one member of the group reflected on his childhood, explaining that his parents supported the family by installing mobile car stereos while his father battled a brain tumor. He said finding tool kits and similar equipment reminded him of those experiences and the work ethic he learned growing up.
The storage unit also contained collectible coins, including walking Liberty half dollars, Buffalo nickels and other older U.S. currency. After having the coins evaluated, the group said those they reviewed were worth about $948.
Not every item added value. The creators said used mattresses would be discarded, while a large Samsung television was found with a cracked screen. Some clothing and household goods were set aside for possible donation.
Freight Trailer Adds to the Haul
After finishing the storage unit, the group returned to inspect the second part of the purchase, an old dry-van trailer containing abandoned freight and returned merchandise.
The trailer held nine pallets of miscellaneous items, including shop equipment, tools, household products and automotive parts.
According to the creators, freight that cannot be returned to manufacturers or vendors is often sold through brokers or auctions. They said higher-value items would be kept while the remaining inventory would likely be bundled and sold at auction.
Among the more notable discoveries was a light therapy device that the group found listed by its manufacturer for about $8,900. While they questioned whether it could be resold for that amount, the creators said the device could significantly increase the overall value of the purchase.
Creators Estimate Haul Exceeded Purchase Price
After reviewing both purchases, the team estimated the storage unit contained roughly $800 worth of usable items, in addition to the collectible coins.
They also estimated the trailer itself was worth about $2,500 and said the tools and equipment they planned to keep would cost between $4,000 and $5,000 to replace.
Although the creators said the haul was not their biggest or most profitable purchase, they concluded the combined value of the storage unit, trailer and recovered items exceeded their initial investment.
Final resale values for many of the items had not been determined at the time the video was published.
