Dubai gig unites two music journeys as Lucky Ali’s classics move Honey Singh
Dubai: There was an unexpected star in the front row at Lucky Ali’s Dubai concert on August 16: rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh.
Singh was spotted attending the veteran singer’s live show at the Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday night, and beyond the obvious celebrity-spotting moment, there was something rather heartening about watching one musician simply turn up to support another. He was seen taking pictures of Ali on stage and the crowd.
I was at the concert too, and nostalgia was clearly the headliner that night.
Lucky Ali didn’t need an elaborate stage, flashy dancers or theatrical gimmicks to hold a packed arena’s attention. The set-up was simple, almost Spartan, allowing his distinctive, slightly weathered voice to do all the talking. And it worked.
As he belted out the songs that have sound tracked an entire generation, including beloved hits from his decades-long career, the audience sang along with him. His musicians were superb, while the flute was particularly memorable, adding another soulful dimension to songs already soaked in nostalgia.
And sitting in the front row was troubled rapper Singh; a musician who has experienced the dizzying highs, lows and second acts that come with a long career in music.
His appearance also took me back to my interview with Singh in Dubai last year, when the rapper spoke candidly about how radically his life had changed.
The Honey Singh I first met in 2011 was deep in his live-on-the-edge rockstar era, when fame, parties and excess seemed to travel together. When we met again in 2025, the man sitting across from me was talking about spirituality, creativity, family and leaving that party life behind.
“I’ve changed as a human,” Singh told me then. “I kept the best parts of myself and deleted the rest. I turned towards God, spirituality, friendship, love. That’s what keeps me going.”
Dubai has played a significant role in that reinvention.
“Dubai has always felt like India to me,” Singh said. “We speak Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi here, and it just feels like home.”
His relationship with the city stretches back years. His music video Brown Rang was shot in Dubai in 2011, and he has been based here since 2023. He also told me that living in the UAE had broadened his outlook.
“Dubai allows everyone — British, Egyptian, Filipino, Indian — to become one family,” he said. “It’s made me more open, more multicultural.”
Perhaps that is why seeing him quietly enjoying another artist’s concert felt fitting.
Singh told me last year that he no longer chases the party circuit.
“I don’t go to parties anymore. I make two songs a day, three beats a day,” he said. “I don’t work for labels or industry — I work for my fans, and for myself. That’s my kick.”
On Sunday night, however, he wasn’t the performer or the headline. He was a fan in the front row, watching Lucky Ali command an arena with little more than his voice, his musicians and a catalogue of songs that have endured.
In an industry so often defined by rivalries, egos and competition, it was great to see one musician simply showing up for another.
And Lucky Ali? He reminded Dubai that sometimes you don’t need spectacle. Give a great musician a microphone, a flute, a terrific band and songs that carry decades of memories — and let the music do the rest.
