According to an alleged leaked email, Xbox’s disc-to-digital program is coming this month

    • 0-20%: Unlikely – Lacks credible sources
    • 21-40%: Questionable – Some concerns remain
    • 41-60%: Plausible – Reasonable evidence
    • 61-80%: Probable – Strong evidence
    • 81-100%: Highly Likely – Multiple reliable sources

[Update – August 3, 6:54 AM] In a new report, Windows Centralrevealed that the launch ofXbox disc-to-digital Positron program is scheduled for August 2026, giving more credibility to the alleged leaked email.

    Original story follows.

[Original Story] With PlayStation still set to sunset game discs production in 2028, it seems like the future of console gaming will be all digital, a future that many among gamers and game developers are not really looking forward to. While Sony has yet to make it clear if those with physical PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 game discs will be able to redeem a digital license for their games to continue playing them on the PlayStation 6, Xbox seems to have a much clearer plan in place, with a leaked disc-to-digital initiative which should begin rolling out later this month, according to a new leak.

“Disc to Digital will officially arrive in August 2026. The user inserts a disc, and a digital license is linked to that disc,” says an alleged leaked internal email shared on X by console modder and developer RetroGamer_74. “The email doesn’t go into detail about how the license is technically lost when the disc changes hands, but it is supposedly addressed.”

This isn’t the first time we have heard about a disc-to-digital initiative from Xbox, as the Positron program was briefly mentioned in a report from Windows Central back in May. Details are scarce now as they were a few months back, but if this email is real, and the program is indeed launching later this month, it shouldn’t take much longer to learn how exactly it will work, and what the limitations will be.

“The Disc-to-Digital system appears to be based on the digital license being linked to the physical disc and transferred with it, preventing duplication,” says RetroGamer_74, which is not surprising, considering how easy it would be to abuse this system without any limitation.

The rest of the alleged internal mail from Xbox goes over the Backward Compatibility program expansion to PC and the upcomingXbox Project Helix(which may keep disc support), detailing its roadmap from its early access launch last month to its full launch in October 2026 and expansion over the next couple of years. “On Helix, the game will run with the emulator, but visually it will appear as if it were a normal PC game. Xbox reminds publishers that no port will be necessary to enable this. Each game will be certified title by title. Xbox makes it clear that they cannot unilaterally publish any title. Therefore, it is the responsibility of publishers and developers to authorize it. They are the ones who hold the rights to the video game, the brand, and to notify their players of the existence or not of this emulator compatibility,” the leaked mail reads.

As third-party publishers will have to actively support Xbox backward compatibility on PC and thus Xbox Project Helix, it’s unlikely the entire library of legacy games like Halo Combat Evolved or Forza Horizon on the original Xbox and Xbox 360 will become available through the program. Still, this, and the disc-to-digital program, sound like a resounding victory for game preservation, which the all-digital futurePlayStation is pushing toward is putting in serious danger. Ironic that it is Xbox, of all companies, to spearhead this initiative, as it was the first one to attempt, and fail, to bring the all-digital future with the Xbox One, before backlash made it take a step back.
