When Sony announced earlier this year that it was ending production and support for physical PlayStation discs, it drew widespread backlash and criticism from fans and gamers alike. It marked a shift toward a digital-only future, one similar to the current PC gaming market where digital platforms like Steam dominate.
Since Sony’s announcement, Microsoft has distanced itself from this no-physical-media future, while also announcing new programs like Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital, which lets users gain full digital rights for compatible Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs. And now, thanks to a new ‘Xbox Games Supply Strategist’ job listing, it looks like Microsoft’s future plans for Xbox include physical media.
According to the job description, the role would include coordinating “the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms, lead development, and oversee execution of global supply positioning strategies across all stages of the product lifecycle.” Because Xbox is a multiplatform environment that includes PC and competing consoles, in addition to the Xbox Series X and the upcoming Project Helix family of devices, the role sounds specifically tied to physical game releases.

Of course, outside of gaming on platforms like the PlayStation 5, the creation and manufacturing of new Blu-ray discs is relatively niche and slowing down, so Microsoft continuing to release physical disc games for Xbox and other platforms could also be referring to a transition to a Nintendo-like SD Card-style system, as seen with the Nintendo Switch 2’s Game Cards.

Sony’s announcement pointed toward ending production and support for physical PlayStation discs, but it did not rule out all reprints of existing games. The separate story “PlayStation games out before 2028 can still get disc reprints” reports that games released before 2028 remain eligible for disc reprints.

The job listing doesn’t mention discs at all, but it does mention “phase in/phase out” and “ramp up/down” processes and procedures alongside managing and working with supply chains, manufacturing, and marketing. Ultimately, the role could signal that Microsoft plans to support physical media on its upcoming Xbox Project Helix hardware, for as long as it makes financial sense.
