Xbox disc-to-digital program confirms retro 360 era catalog release window

Owners of many original Xbox 360 discs may now have another reason to hold onto their physical copies, as a new report details future plans for the disc-to-digital program.

Last month, it was reported that Xbox was developing a “disc to digital” program for Xbox discs, allowing users to digitise their physical game collections and play them on platforms such as Xbox Series S and PC.

Although the report at the time claimed that only Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs would be compatible with this new feature, a more recent report now suggests that Xbox 360 games will also be added to the program at a later date.

What’s more, we also have some dates reported for when these features will become available, including the new backward compatibility feature for Xbox exclusives that’s coming to PC.

As and shared by insider eXtas1s, a roadmap for the disc-to-digital feature has been leaked in an email sent to publishers, seemingly confirming when the program will go live as well as when Xbox 360 games will become available

The leaked email reveals that the Disc to Digital insider public beta was planned to launch in July 2026, while general availability will become available in August to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners.

It’s possible these dates may have been shuffled around a bit, as we’re now in August and there’s no sign of the feature coming to the insiders program.

Xbox disc-to-digital may feature 360 games in a future update

After this, the email also claims that backwards compatibility on PC will launch fully in October 2026, with original Xbox titles coming to PC

The final part of the roadmap says that the Xbox 360 catalog will then rollout on “next-gen Xbox devices” sometime between 2027 and 2028.

Retro Gamer adds that these games will be running through an emulator on PC, and that third-party publishers will not be required to develop a port as the emulator will be doing all the heavy lifting.

They also claim that each game will be certified individually, making it clear that Xbox can’t publish any title it wants to without permission from the publisher. This may be different from the disc-to-digital program on Xbox One and Series X, which seemingly works out of the box with any disc.

Of course, it’s best to take all of this information with a huge grain of salt for now, as nothing has been confirmed from Xbox just yet.

Even the disc-to-digital program hasn’t been formally announced yet, although we know Xbox has some kind of plan for that, as references to “enable Disc2Digital” has appeared in the Xbox PC app code since May 2026.

Earlier reports have suggested how it’ll work, claiming that digital entitlements granteditlements moving from account to account if you swap the disc with a friend or log into a different Xbox profile on your console
