Microsoft could be preparing to launch Positron, a new system that lets Xbox players turn their physical game discs into digital licenses, according to a new leak.
The same leaked document also claims that more original Xbox and Xbox 360 games will become playable on PC over the coming months.
According to insider eXtas1s, Microsoft recently sent a document to publishers, explaining how original Xbox and Xbox 360 games will work on PC, along with details about Positron.
More Classic Xbox Games Are Coming to PC
While the information has not been officially confirmed, the document is said to come directly from Xbox. It claims that Positron has already been in testing for the past few weeks and is expected to launch later this month.
The feature will be available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles that include a disc drive. It will not work on the Xbox Series S or the Xbox Series X Digital Edition. Players will simply insert a supported game disc, and the system will automatically add a digital license for that game to the Xbox account linked to the console.
For those who don’t know, Positron will not stop players from buying, selling, or lending physical games. Each digital license will remain connected to the original game disc, meaning the disc will still be required to keep access to the game.
The same report also mentions a larger rollout of original Xbox games on PC. After a small first wave that included four titles, including Conker: Live and Reloaded, many more games are expected to become available starting in October. Players will be able to play original Xbox games natively through Game Pass or by purchasing them from the Microsoft Store.
Support for Xbox 360 games on PC is also expected to grow between 2027 and 2028, with more titles becoming available during that period.
Finally, it’s worth noting that, publishers will have the final say on whether their games join the program and and they can also charge for it, which is why Microsoft is said to have shared the document with its publishing partners.
