Women-Led series outperform their share of streaming supply, Luminate finds
The data firm’s analysis shows female-centered titles account for 17% of U.S. streaming minutes but just 11% of premieres, with serialized dramas and literary adaptations among the most underserved categories.
Women-centered stories remain underrepresented in streaming, despite generating a disproportionate share of viewing. According to Luminate data covering series released from 2025 through Q3 2026, titles led by or focused on female characters accounted for 11% of premieres but captured 17% of U.S. streaming minutes.
The gap points to an imbalance between content supply and audience demand, offering a potential opportunity for platforms and producers seeking to allocate programming budgets more efficiently. While the difference is not substantial across the category as a whole, the breakdown by genre reveals more pronounced gaps.
Serialized dramas stand out. The category represented one-third of women-centered series released during the period but generated 44% of streaming minutes for those titles, an 11-percentage-point difference. Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” its most-streamed title in 2025, and the breakout performance of “Furious” illustrate the audience appetite for female-led serialized storytelling. Thrillers also ranked among the categories with the largest gaps between supply and demand.
Literary adaptations showed the widest disparity, with a 16-point gap between their share of supply and viewing. The category accounted for nearly one-third of streaming minutes but just 16% of available titles. <a href="https://www.netflix.com” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Netflix’s “Bridgerton” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” helped drive viewing, reinforcing the potential of established literary properties with built-in audiences. Amazon has also reorganized its television studio to strengthen its focus on young adult adaptations.
For Luminate, the findings point to a broader programming strategy: identifying categories where audience demand exceeds the volume of available content. In an increasingly data-driven streaming market, underserved genres could offer platforms and producers a clearer route to targeted investment and stronger audience engagement.
