Wizards of the Coast revealed new details on Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, a new Magic: The Gathering booster set, which will hit retail on April 9, 2027.
The announcement of a third Marvel set as being one of the three Universes Beyond sets slated for 2027 (see “Sets for 2027”) was perhaps a predictable one because there are five Infinity Stones and only two of them have been printed as Magic cards, thus far. However, it was hardly predictable that Marvel and WotC teams would jointly create an original Marvel universe storyline. The story of Darkhold Destiny will unfold on Magic cards and in a comic series next year; the first chapter of the comic story will be released digitally on February 26, and then the physical comics will launch alongside the Magic: The Gathering booster set on April 9, 2026.
The Darkhold Destiny set expands the tale of The Darkhold, a book of black magic that was created by the Elder God Chthon and contains magic powers that can drive the reader insane (see “‘Darkhold Alpha'”). This book was first mentioned in Marvel Spotlight #3 (1972) and then, officially introduced in Marvel Spotlight #4 (1972). Since then, all sorts of different characters have managed to get their hands on the book, including Doctor Doom, Scarlet Witch, and others. In the new storyline, it seems like it is Hela’s turn to try her hand at reining in the power of The Darkhold.
As for the Magic set itself, it offers up the usual array of SKUs with the exception that Play Boosters are now back to being Booster Packs (see “Booster Fun?”). However, there is no Beginner Box for this set, which was a product recently eliminated from the Star Trek booster set slate (see “Wizards of the Coast Cancels”). Also of note, there is a Midnight Sons commander deck, so popular Marvel characters Ghost Rider and Blade will likely make their first appearance on Magic cards.
The product line is as follows:
