Whenever Rabindranath’s legacy was questioned, people embraced him even more fiercely: Ramendu Majumdar

Ramendu Majumdar has condemned the recent defacement of a graffiti portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, describing it as an act of intolerance.

The Ekushey Padak-winning cultural personality was visibly taken aback by the event. “Rabindranath Tagore is a world-renowned poet who brought recognition to Bengalis and the Bangla language on the global stage. Yet, his graffiti portrait was recently subjected to a communal attack. Whoever did this has a communal mindset,” he said.

    ‘Harassment of artistes not acceptable’

“Such an act is deeply condemnable. Here is a man whose writings have made him immortal. His works stand over us like a great banyan tree, spreading light among people. Yet someone chooses to deface his portrait with ink,” he added.
The theatre veteran stressed that such acts could not diminish Tagore’s literary and musical legacy.

“As long as Bengalis exist, Tagore’s works will endure. That is an undeniable truth. His songs reflect every aspect of human life and remain an inseparable part of our culture. Beyond music, his contributions extend to every branch of literature,” he said.

Reflecting on past attempts to suppress Tagore’s works, Majumdar recalled restrictions imposed on broadcasting his songs.

“Tagore’s works were banned in the past as well. During the Pakistan period, restrictions limited the broadcast of his songs on the radio. But those attempts only increased his popularity and the appreciation of his creations. It is impossible to imagine our cultural life without him,” he said.

Asked about the importance of introducing Tagore’s writings to younger generations, the Ekushey Padak recipient encouraged young people to read extensively.

“He produced so much in a single lifetime that very few people can read everything. I believe the younger generation must develop the habit of reading his works, as well as those of Kazi Nazrul Islam and other great writers. Reading helps people develop intellectually and become better human beings,” he said.

Speaking about his personal connection with Rabindra Sangeet, Majumdar said the Kabi Guru’s songs remain an essential part of his life.

“I cannot imagine myself without Tagore’s songs. His music inspires me, gives me strength and fills me with courage,” he said. “He thought deeply about rural development and did a great deal of work in that area. He was an extraordinary person who constantly thought about the poor. He was tirelessly devoted to his work. It is heartbreaking to see someone deface the portrait of such a person,” he said.

As Durga Puja celebrations are underway, the veteran artiste wants to celebrate it with family and loved ones. “I felt very positive about this year’s Mahalaya. I believe Durga Puja will be celebrated with great enthusiasm. It would be even better if the government issued a clear message of harmony. I am an optimistic person, and I hope the celebrations will be peaceful and enjoyable,” he concluded.
