Archive of Our Own (AO3) has gone offline following a security incident, with the shutdown potentially lasting up to four weeks. The outage has sparked panic, memes and ‘we are doomed’ reactions among fans, many of whom are now desperate to find alternatives to their favourite fanfic archive.

The internet has officially entered its fanfiction emergency era. Archive of Our Own (AO3), one of the biggest online destinations for fanfiction readers and writers, has gone offline following a cybersecurity incident on October 29, 2026.

The news has sent its massive fandom into a complete meltdown. Initially, it was expected to be a routine 12-hour maintenance break, but it was later announced that it could become a potential four-week shutdown, leaving fans wondering how they are supposed to survive without their daily dose of fictional romance.

The announcement has sparked huge frustration and panic across social media. While some users are desperate to find alternative ways to access their favourite stories, others are turning the situation into meme material.

Here’s everything we know so far.

What is AO3 and why are fans so attached to it?

For anyone living under a rock and wondering why the internet is losing its mind over a website going offline, Archive of Our Own,or AO3,is a non-profit fanfiction archive launched in 2008 by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW). The platform allows fans to publish, read, and explore fan-created stories based on their favourite books, films, television shows, anime, video games, and of course, celebrities.

#AO3 maintenance is in progress. We expect it to take at least 12 hours, but it may take longer. We will provide updates as necessary. Refer to our status page for updates: https://t.co/xzGXE5I609

    — AO3 Status (@AO3_Status) October 29, 2026

AO3 is particularly popular for its extensive tagging and filtering system, allowing readers to find stories based on specific characters, relationships, genres, and tropes. Be it alternate-universe romance, a slow-burn love story, or a completely unhinged fictional crossover, AO3 is your go-to website.

Unlike commercial writing platforms, AO3 is funded through donations and maintained by volunteers. It also follows an anti-censorship approach, making it a major space for fan-created works that might not find a home on more restrictive platforms. In short, for many readers, AO3 is less of a website and more of a digital home.

Why is AO3 down and when will it return?

The trouble began on Thursday, October 29, when AO3 went offline for what was initially announced as routine maintenance expected to last around 12 hours. They posted on X (formerly Twitter), “#AO3 maintenance is in progress. We expect it to take at least 12 hours, but it may take longer.”

However, the situation took a serious turn when OTW detected evidence of a security incident during the process. They later notified, “We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks, but it could be up to 4 weeks.”

We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: https://t.co/YAyyoTDOpE

In its October 30 update, the organisation confirmed that it was still investigating the incident and trying to determine its full scope.

There is some reassuring news for users. OTW confirmed that “no AO3 data has been deleted”, meaning users’ “works, bookmarks and kudos are safe.”

Earlier today, we detected evidence of a security incident on #AO3. We are still in the early stages of investigating. No AO3 data has been deleted. All your works, bookmarks, kudos, etc., are safe. Learn more at https://t.co/xzGXE5HyaB

However, the organisation has not been able to rule out the possibility that its user database was “stolen.” The database may contain usernames, email addresses, IP addresses and hashed passwords.

As a precaution, OTW has advised users to change passwords on other websites if they have reused their AO3 password elsewhere. The organisation has also clarified that donor information is stored separately and has not been exposed.

    ‘Junkies on withdrawal’: AO3 outage
    leaves fans in absolute meltdown

While the security investigation continues, the fandom community is having a rather difficult time accepting the possibility of spending weeks without AO3. Social media has quickly filled with dramatic reactions, with users asking, “How did you go from 12 hours to 1 month???”

The panic has also triggered a wave of digital survival planning. Fans have started sharing links to downloaded fanfiction collections and Google Drive folders containing saved stories. Those who regularly download their favourite works are suddenly looking like the smartest people in the room.

WHAT TO DO WHILE AO3 IS DOWN – MASTERPOST i am adding every google drive of every ship i can find (with a direct link to the author of the drive obviously) as well as two options for you to find other ships not listed. just open this document: https://t.co/HEtfVP4DJ5 https://t.co/ohRCmGRlOF

Some users even started documenting their life with the caption, “Day 1 without AO3.” The timing has added another layer of frustration, with the outage arriving just as October draws to a close and Kinktober, the annual fan-created writing event, reaches its final days.

‘Thank you for your service’: Fans support AO3 volunteers despite growing frustration

Interestingly, the outrage has not been directed entirely at the platform’s administrators. While readers are understandably frustrated about losing access to their favourite stories, many have also expressed support for the volunteers working to restore the archive.

A user noted, “Tell us who hacked you and we’ll beat their a**.” Another wrote, “We will hunt down those who try to hurt AO3; just watch out.”

Several users have urged the community not to harass the OTW team, pointing out that AO3 is a donation-funded, volunteer-run project rather than a commercial platform with a large paid engineering department. Some even blamed Wattpad and called them the culprit.

AO3 IS RUN BY VOLUNTEERSthey do not get paid for any of this. be kind, patient, and respectful to the volunteers who work hard to keep ao3 running, fight against censorship, and protect writers, fanfics, and people’s rights/freedom to write whatever they want, however they want

It can safely be stated, “AO3 really is the fandom’s one true favourite.”
