Watch ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ Tear Bubs Into Bloody Smithereens

It goes without saying that Grand Theft Auto VI‘s exclusive reveal is dominating water-cooler talk at Gamescom, much like its November release date is a splash zone that every other game developer is avoiding like the plague. However, PlayStation released its own game featurette reminding folks that it’s got a Wolverine game to look forward to in a couple of weeks.

With every new showcase we’ve gotten of Marvel’s Wolverine, the action game has emphatically set itself apart from developer Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man ventures. One key element to that formula is blood. And boy howdy, does the game have it and then some.

In the past, we’ve seen in-game and cutscene footage of Wolverine—played by Liam McIntyre—shred bubs like a julienne salad. While today’s game feature isn’t short on all the viscera, Logan’s exposed adamantium skeleton, and winks at fellow X-Men Jean Grey and foe Sabertooth joining in the fray, it doesn’t get too lost in the carnage players can dish out from the diminutive Canadian. It is a video game with strategic combat, rewards, and a world to explore amid all the mayhem.

As with most character action games, Marvel’s Wolverine features a skill tree that lets players tailor Logan to their needs. Be it deflecting bullets, parrying swords, or soaking up damage like a sponge before closing the distance and snikt-ing Trask goons and the cybernetic mercenary group, Reavers, Logan’s going to get into copious amounts of combat scenarios across the globe where environmental elements appear to be as much a staple to his takedowns as dismemberment. That is, unless Sabretooth steals your kills.

Should you get torn from ass to appetite in the game (no shame, it happens), Logan’s healing factor will be at play, though we’re still getting used to the fact that his costume—of which there are many—heals alongside him. Wouldn’t want him hanging dong in the middle of a boss fight. Speaking of boss fights, the featurette teased that Logan will tussle with Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike at various points throughout the game.

We’re big fans of the featurette revealing the game will release with New Game Plus for folks wanting to spin the block with an entirely new build of Logan. It’s also neat that the game comes equipped with accessibility features, including over 100 settings for visuals, sounds, and gameplay, as well as a toggle to turn Wolverine’s mask and potty mouth on or off. And who doesn’t love a good photo mode?

While there’ll no doubt be opinions forming as to what a Wolverine will make you feel like Wolverine with all the exaggerated swagger of Weapon X, it’ll be hard not to find out firsthand when Marvel’s Wolverine releases on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro on September 15.
