Divyenndu on Waiting Hai: ‘Don’t need to wear cape to be a superhero’

Divyenndu opens up about playing Sugam Mishra in Waiting Hai, saying the railway constable’s pure intentions and courage drew him to the role. The actor wanted to preserve Sugam’s simplicity rather than make him a conventional hero

For Divyenndu, playing Sugam Mishra in Waiting Hai was less about portraying a conventional hero and more about finding the extraordinary in an ordinary man. The actor stars alongside Bhuvan Arora in the new MX Original, which follows a railway constable who finds himself caught up in an investigation after spotting irregularities in the ticketing system.

The quirky scam dramedy, now streaming on Prime Video, is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Sameer Vidwans. The ensemble also features Harshita Gaur, Kumud Mishra, Vijay Maurya, Srushti Tare and Sunita Rajwar.
Speaking about what attracted him to the role, Divyenndu said Sugam’s genuine nature immediately stood out to him. The character is someone who, despite being somewhat naive, genuinely believes that he can make a difference.
“I think what really drew me to Sugam was how pure-hearted he is and how genuine his intentions are,” the actor said.
According to Divyenndu, Sugam’s willingness to challenge something he believes is wrong becomes the driving force behind his journey, even when it puts him in difficult situations. For the actor, that honesty was also what made Sugam interesting to play. Rather than turning him into an exaggerated hero, Divyenndu wanted to retain the character’s simplicity and allow his humanity to come through.
“I wanted to hold on to this man’s simplicity. Maybe he is not the brightest person in the room, but he has all the right intentions and the courage to follow that inner voice,” he explained. Divyenndu also recently marked his 15th year in Bollywood.
Divyenndu finds a hero in Sugam
Divyenndu believes Sugam’s appeal lies precisely in the fact that he is not presented as someone extraordinary. His courage comes from following his conscience, even when bureaucracy, hierarchy and other obstacles stand in his way.
“I always believe in grounding my characters so that, even if you cannot fully relate to them, there is some degree of humanity that draws you towards them,” he said, adding that Sugam represents the idea that heroism does not necessarily require larger-than-life qualities. “We don’t need to wear a cape to be a superhero,” Divyenndu said.
Waiting Hai combines humour, suspense and chaos around the seemingly simple pursuit of a confirmed railway ticket. Produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Ajay Rai, the series is a Jio Studios presentation and Jar Pictures production.
