Coming out of D23, where concept art for VisionQuest seemed to indicate that Jim Hammond, aka The Human Torch, would appear in the <a href="https://comicvibe.com/ps5-and-xbox-series-vs-ps4-and-xbox-one-sales-comparison/” title=”PS5 and Xbox Series vs PS4 and Xbox One Sales Comparison”>series, social media insiders teased that Marvel Comics first superhero would appear in the series.
Though the character appeared as a brief Easter egg/cameo in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, his MCU story has never been told, leaving room for showrunner Terry Matalas to retcon the Synthetic Man into the MCU’s mostly unwritten history as he pleased. And while we can’t be quite sure exactly what that will be, it now seems that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
Thanks to some high quality promo art for the upcoming series, it is confirmed that the character seen at D23 will be J.I.M. (Joule Individual Machine) Hammond, created by Phineas Horton.
The images reveal what look to be Horton’s blueprints for J.I.M. and indicate that he was built at New York’s Burgos Laboratory, a nod to Carl Burgos, who created the character for 1939’s Marvel Comics #1.
Reports have J.I.M. filling a small role in VisionQuest and with Marvel Studios cutting back on the number of projects they make, aCaptain America and the Invaders project doesn’t seem like something we’ll see anytime soon; however, it is inarguably great to see Golden Age characters find their way into the MCU, even if in cameos.
VisionQuest debuts on D+ in October 14.
