‘VisionQuest’ Boss Explains Vision’s ‘Identity Crisis’ in Trilogy Conclusion

    Fall Preview

Ever wondered what happened to “White Vision” when he flew off at the end of 2021’s WandaVision? We’re finally about to find out in Disney+’s upcoming series, VisionQuest.

Marvel’s TV trilogy, which began with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) genre-bending family story and later continued with the 2024 sequel Agatha All Along, following witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), is concluding with this aptly-named show. Bettany returns to his role as the advanced AI synthezoid hero — with a twist. This Vision is not the one Wanda married and had super children with. Originally created to destroy the out-of-control Wanda during WandaVision, this Vision was built using the original’s parts and restored memories, but missing his Mind Stone. Without it, he lacks the emotional intelligence that makes him more “human” — and lots of other cool skills.

Now, years after his creation, Vision is trying to restore his soul and fit in amongst humanity, while wrestling with the memories that live inside him in the wake of Wanda’s death.

“It’s been years since the events of WandaVision. And we pick up with what Vision is now doing in the world,” explains showrunner Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys). “We’ll find out that it’s been some time since the world has seen Vision flying around and that he is spending time amongst human beings, deciding what it means to be human. He has a bit of a different perspective than he used to.”

“He is questioning what it means to be Vision at this moment,” continues Matalas. “This is a story of someone going through an identity crisis. You’re going to see and feel and hear that happen in ways by going inside and outside of Vision’s head. The story takes place within his mind space and the rest of it takes place in our proper MCU world, and the juxtaposition of those two tones is really fun.”

In that mind space, located in his quantum processors, Vision tests out living his best AI-version of a human life — but his only help is coming from the other AI bots currently living with him, seen through human avatars. They include older brother figure/former Stark AI J.A.R.V.I.S. (a returning James D’Arcy), youthful E.D.I.T.H. (Schitt’s Creek‘s Emily Hampshire), traumatized F.R.I.D.A.Y. (Orla Brady), and un-evolved bot arms, Dum-E (Henry Lewis) and U (Jonathan Sayer). “They all have their own quirks,” Matalas says, and they each “are helping him with different facets of humanity.”

The series isn’t all just fantasies, though. Outside of Vision’s mind space, he must contend with bounty hunter Paladin (Todd Stashwick, 12 Monkeys). And then there’s Ultron (James Spader, returning to the role for the first time since 2015, and for the first time in a physical form), the supervillain AI who tried to make humans extinct — and is responsible for designing Vision. We learn Vision didn’t actually execute his father; he kept Ultron backed up in his processors. “But that doesn’t mean Ultron’s not longing to be back out in the world,” Matalas teases.

Ultron helps Vision recall the existence of his son Tommy/Speed (Ruaridh Mollica), setting off what Matalas calls “a generational story,” between Ultron, Vision, and Tommy. “There’s sort of a three-way father-son dynamic with Ultron and Vision, and then Vision with Tommy. It’s fun, between the three [of them].”

Spader, who Matalas recalls had “unbelievable” chemistry with Bettany, will also share a number of scenes with a new android named Jocasta (T’Nia Miller, The Haunting of Bly Manor). Comic fans may recognize the character as Ultron’s bride. Here, all Matalas would say about Miller’s role is that she “has a mysterious backstory and has a lot of scene work with James Spader. And I cannot wait for people to see that. In comic canon, Jocasta was a love interest for Ultron. So maybe we’ll get these two together in some way. And what would that mean for the world?”

While Ultron maybe finds love, Vision is grappling with the lingering hold Wanda has on his memories. “He is in the process of working through quite a few things, and tapping back into those feelings of who he was, which is all stored inside him, but might be painful to access,” Matalas explains. But, the showrunner adds: “Vision will definitely have a perspective on Wanda very early on. And [he] has a point of view on [her death].”

Still, there’s some interesting symmetry between Wanda and Vision both creating their own worlds to face their difficult feelings, and Matalas agrees: “Both characters don’t quite know what to do with the emotions that are inside them and are trying to figure it out in these ways.”

Overall, it’s safe to say that fans can expect VisionQuest to be both a thematic coda to the trilogy — and its own adventure entirely. “Like WandaVision, it’s very much its own tone and story. It is quirky, surreal, but also a high-stakes adventure with a big mystery lurking in the background. It definitely leans into the science fiction of what it means to be a robot,” Matalas notes, adding: “This is all about the Marvel AIs. It’s their moment.”
