visionOS 26.2 improves Apple Vision Pro tracking in cars and buses

visionOS 26.2 improves tracking in Travel Mode and officially supports using Apple Vision Pro in cars and buses.

When Apple Vision Pro launched in early 2024, it was the first headset to feature travel mode, a toggle for operating the location tracking system inside a moving vehicle.

Over the years since then, Meta, Pico, Snap, and Google have implemented their own travel modes on their headsets.

When it first launched, Apple’s Travel Mode was designed specifically for airplanes. Last year’s visionOS 2 was updated to officially support trains. And with visionOS 26.2 released last week, Apple Vision Pro also officially supports cars and buses.

“Travel Mode lets passengers use Apple Vision Pro in cars and buses, as well as planes and trains,” Apple’s release notes say.

visionOS 26 now available: PS VR2 controller, photorealistic persona, spatial scenes, and more

visionOS 26 is now released and brings PS VR2 controller support, more realistic personas, spatial widgets, volumetric spatial scenes, local SharePlay, and more.

I say “officially” because this feature already works in these scenarios. When picking up my Apple Vision Pro in New York on release day, I used Travel Mode in the back seat of an Uber. There was some jitter, but it worked fine.

I’m curious to see how much improvement official support brings, so I’ll give Apple Vision Pro’s Travel Mode another try the next time I take a long trip in Uber, Waymo, or the bus.

The update arrives in the same week that Google announced and began rolling out Travel Mode for Android XR on the Galaxy XR, which officially only supports Airplanes.

Samsung Galaxy XR gets realistic face tracking ‘caricature’ avatar

Android XR on Samsung Galaxy XR adds a persona-like realistic avatar system for video calls called Likeness, as well as Travel Mode and a built-in remote desktop app.
