Va. (WVIR) – Virginia football doesn’t start fall ball until later this month, but some of the ‘Hoos are still in Charlottesville hitting the field, just in a different way

Scott Stadium may be empty in real life, but virtually, it’s packed to the brim

Virginia football players rented a gaming truck, full of a variety of video games, so they could get closer with their fans

Tight End Dakota Twitty says the event is about more than just playing games

“A lot of people might not look at us as gamers, but we’re gamers just like anybody else. So this is a great way, a great opportunity for us to kind of bridge that gap between the fans and the athletes and just show that we’re all one in the same,” Twitty said

Defensive Tackle Anthony Britton says he and his teammates are more than what people see on Saturdays

“You know, we’re more than just a helmet or a number or a name plate on our backs. Like, we’re actually people, too. And we like to have fun just like everybody else,” Britton said

The group of athletes are part of Out the Pads Gaming, a group of football players who use their love for gaming to connect with fans. Soon, Wahoos can play one-on-one with and against their favorite football stars

“I think it just shows that we’re committed to showing the fans who we are and we want to connect with them. You know, we appreciate their support in games and in any other endeavors in life. So we just appreciate that. And we just wanted to give them just a sense of what our daily lives look like and who we are as people,” Running Back Xavier Brown said

Each player says video games play a major role in building and keeping friendships with teammates and friends everywhere

“All of us, we bond through gaming. A lot of guys that we play with, we get on the game all the time. You know, we talk with our friends. You know, that’s how we stay connected, you know, even while we’re in college,” Defensive Tackle Jason Hammond said

The players say fans should expect a big announcement from Out the Pads Gaming soon
