Veteran anime director and animator Yuji Yanase passed away due to a myocardial infarction, MAHO FILM president and CEO Junji Murata confirmed on Wednesday.
Yanase’s family has already arranged a private funeral for close family members following his death on August 22. The studio expressed sincere appreciation for his many contributions to its artistic work over the years.
Yanase was concurrently directing two television shows that were airing during the summer 2026 anime season when he passed away. These were The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne and The World’s Strongest Rearguard.
Production committees for each of the current shows issued comments complimenting his leadership after the decision. His friendly demeanour and the enthusiasm he brought to the studio floor were recalled by colleagues.
These feelings were shared by the team behind The Insipid Prince’s Furtive Grab for the Throne, who said that he led their employees with a strong love for the original work. Both accounts sent their heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones.
Starting in the mid-1990s, Yuji Yanase had a successful career. Before working on the 2001 version of Shaman King, he became well known as an animation director on films such as Sabre Marionette J (1996) and Mashin Hero Wataru (1997).
He started directing episodes in the 2000s. During this time, he worked on the romantic comedy My Bride Is a Mermaid in 2007, the science fiction series Noein in 2006, and “Ghost Slayers Ayashi.”
He took on the position of series director for several fantasy adaptations later in his career. Several of the films in his most recent portfolio were made at MAHO FILM, where he rose to prominence in the studio’s pipeline. Yanase directed well-known games that contributed to the company’s reputation for creating humorous isekai adventures.
