TUF Gaming 1200W Platinum PSU (Hardware) – Review

Graphics cards are continuing to demand more power, and as those requirements increase, it makes sense that the hardware supplying that power needs to keep up. While making sure your choice has a high enough wattage output, delivering it efficiently and reliably is becoming just as important, particularly considering memory-adjacent components are rising in price.

That’s where the ASUS TUF Gaming 1200W Platinum PSU comes in, offering 1200W of power alongside ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 support, making it well-suited to modern high-end gaming systems and newer graphics cards using the 16-pin 12V-2×6 connection.

At the heart of the ASUS TUF Gaming 1200W Platinum PSU is a GaN MOSFET, improving efficiency and heat management while freeing up space for larger heatsinks and better airflow. Combined with low-ESR Japanese capacitors, it helps the PSU achieve 80 PLUS Platinum certification alongside Cybenetics Platinum ratings at both 115V and 230V, reducing wasted power and heat.

There isn’t a 0dB mode on this model, so the fan remains active rather than shutting down completely at lighter loads, although the PSU carries a Cybenetics A- noise rating.

At 150 x 150 x 86mm, the ASUS TUF Gaming 1200W Platinum PSU keeps everything within a relatively compact footprint, and installation is incredibly straightforward thanks to the fully modular design. Rather than dealing with a bundle of unused cables, you connect what your system actually needs.

The premium etched cables also make cable management considerably easier. They have the appearance of sleeved cables without being anywhere near as stiff, making them much easier to bend and route through tighter sections of a case. ASUS uses tin-plated oxygen-free copper, focusing on conductivity, flexibility, and reduction of heat generation.

There’s no shortage of connections, either. You get a 20+4-pin motherboard cable, two 4+4-pin CPU cables, three 6+2-pin PCIe connections, six SATA connectors and three peripheral connections.

More importantly for modern graphics cards, there’s also a dedicated PCIe 5.1 16-pin 12V-2×6 cable capable of supporting demanding hardware.

ASUS has also upgraded the PCIe connectors with improved copper pins designed to increase thermal conductivity, with its testing showing connector temperatures up to 29% lower than conventional designs.

Naturally, all that power is backed by over-current, over-temperature, over-voltage, over-power, short-circuit, and under-voltage protection. They’re safeguards you’ll hopefully never notice in normal use, but they’re exactly what you want protecting the rest of your system. For some extra peace of mind, it comes backed by an eight-year warranty and an MTBF rating exceeding 120,000 hours at 40°C.

The ASUS TUF Gaming 1200W Platinum PSU isn’t trying to impress with RGB lighting or unnecessary extras. Instead, it’s focused on delivering plenty of efficient, reliable power to increasingly demanding hardware.
