Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is now streaming in India with Japanese audio and English subtitles on Crunchyroll. The 1995 series follows five teenage pilots sent to Earth in advanced Gundams as part of a mission against the military organisation OZ.
The anime is set in the After Colony timeline and centres on Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner and Chang Wufei. Each pilot arrives on Earth separately and initially operates without knowing about the others. Their missions eventually bring them into contact as they work against OZ and the political forces controlling the conflict between Earth and the space colonies.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing was created by Sunrise and originally aired in Japan from April 1995 to March 1996. The series ran for 49 episodes, with Masashi Ikeda and Shinji Takamatsu directing and Katsuyuki Sumizawa handling the story and scripts. Shūkō Murase designed the characters, while Kow Otani composed the music.
The series is part of the wider Gundam franchise but uses its own setting instead of the Universal Century continuity of the original television series. Its story focuses on a war between Earth and its space colonies, with five Gundam pilots placed at the centre of Operation Meteor. The Gundams themselves are highly advanced mobile suits made from the fictional Gundanium Alloy.
The anime became particularly known for its five central pilots and their contrasting personalities, giving the series a strong character-driven element alongside its mecha battles. The show later received follow-up material including the Endless Waltz OVA and film.
