The economy might be slowing down, and pop culture might already be giving us some surprisingly subtle clues

We can all agree that the world changed ever since COVID-19 hit us. While we can see industries being affected by inflation and geopolitical tensions, there are also things in pop culture and our day-to-day lives that indicate businesses around the world may be showing signs that the economy is slowing down. Here’s a look at some of the moments and trends that are worth contemplating.

    Harry Potter Dinner Scene

    Recession

The feast at the Grand Hall inHarry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stoneis one of the most remarkable scenes. The child who was raised under the staircase was suddenly presented with an abundance of delicacies, and that was the whole idea. There’s a picture circulating on social media where Harry Potter, in the upcoming series, played by Dominic McLaughlin, is sitting with friends in the same Grand Hall having a plate of the bare minimum: a sausage, an omelette, a glass of juice, a slice of bread and a banana? Very sigh-worthy.

    Skirt Length

    Recession

Maxi dresses and skirts are having a moment, and it might not be a good thing economically. As per the Hemline Index, a theory that suggests skirt lengths are inversely proportional to stock prices, this was observed in the 1920s and 1960s, when skirt lengths were shorter and times were prosperous, while skirts got longer after the 1929 Wall Street crash. Maybe it’s time to bring back those minis and micros if that can help save the economy.

    The “Cheaper Bubbles”

    Recession

All the soirées and celebrations of the world are sneakily switching from Champagne to Prosecco or other more affordable sparkling wines. The basic idea is that during periods of economic uncertainty, consumers may not necessarily give up the ritual of celebrating, drinking or entertaining, but they have, of course, become more conscious of price.

    Nostalgia Goes Into Overdrive

    Recession

Where is the originality of 2026? Everyone either wants to go back to 2016 or is revisiting fashion, makeup and even music that triggers the comfort of the golden times of the past. It could simply be a cultural cycle, but the comfort of the familiar becomes particularly appealing when the present somehow seems uncertain.

So Many Reboots, Remakes, Sequels & Prequels

    Recession

Suddenly, we haveCocktail 2,Awarapan 2,Coco 2,Practical Magic 2,The Lord of the Ringsprequel series,How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days 2, and the list goes on. All sequels, prequels, remakes and reboots are based on the success of the first film. We are seeing so many of these because studios rely on safer and familiar intellectual properties to lower financial risk and ensure audience turnout.

    AI Flyers

From restaurant menus to event invites and social media promotions, AI-generated flyers are everywhere. How far does the growing dependence on AI to get creative things done without a human element go? As harmless as it looks on the surface, it has shaken the entire creative industry in terms of job losses, and those who are able to sustain have to go above and beyond with an exponential amount of workload.
