Britney Spears fans got an unexpected surprise in the form of a previously unreleased song from the pop icon.
On Oct. 9, Spears and her team dropped the song “She’ll Never Be Me,” which was recorded for her 2001 self-titled third album “Britney.”
The song comes weeks before the album celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special edition re-release, “Britney (25th Anniversary Edition),” that includes songs from the vault.
“She’ll Never Be Me” is a quintessential Britney Spears track with its bubblegum pop, early aughts sound, girl power lyrics and the singer’s signature girlish and gritty vocals.
The 3-minute track talks about a former lover who is now with someone that looks just like her.
“You know I’m one of a kind/Boy, what’s this I see/Your girl, she looks just like me/Blond hair and dressed to a T,” she begins. “You tell me how can this be/Does she know I was the one/Who used to turn you on/But you don’t want to talk about it.”
According to the song’s YouTube description, Spears is credited as the lyricist, associated performer and composer.
Her ex Justin Timberlake is also featured as a lyricist and composer, along with Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs. Riprock ‘n’ Alex G is a producer.
“She’ll Never Be Me” is one of five new songs included in the “Britney” re-release, including “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So,” “My Big Secret” and “Right Now (Taste The Victory)” from her 2002 Pepsi commercial.
Fans will get to hear the songs when “Britney (25th Anniversary Edition)” is released on Nov. 6.
The last time Spears shared a new song was 2023’s “Mind Your Business” with Will.i.am. In 2020, she also dropped a never-before-heard collaboration with the Backstreet Boys titled “Matches.”
The song was featured in a deluxe edition of her 2016 album “Glory.”
