‘I was my second choice’: Why Aaron Sorkin didn’t want to direct The Social Reckoning

Aaron Sorkin has revealed that David Fincher was his first choice to direct The Social Reckoning, but the filmmaker’s existing deal prevented him from returning behind the camera. Sorkin, who wrote The Social Network, said Fincher read the new script, but Sorkin ultimately directed the film himself

Aaron Sorkin wanted David Fincher back behind the camera for his next Facebook-focused film, but the filmmaker’s existing deal stood in the way. Sorkin, who wrote The Social Network, has now revealed that Fincher was his first choice to direct The Social Reckoning, the upcoming film inspired by the Facebook Files investigation.
David Fincher couldn’t return for sequel
Sorkin, who is making his directorial return with the film, admitted that he was not his own first choice to helm the project. “I was my second choice to direct it. I wanted David to direct it, but he couldn’t.”
The filmmaker wanted The Social Reckoning to arrive while the issues explored in the film were still relevant to audiences. “Even if he could have somehow gotten <a href="https://comicvibe.com/sweet-magnolias-and-4-best-netflix-shows-that-didnt-get-a-final-season/” title=”Sweet Magnolias and 4 best Netflix shows that didn't get a final season”>Netflix‘s permission to go work at Sony, I didn’t want The Social Reckoning to come out a year after the midterm elections,” Sorkin explained. “I didn’t think we were going to be in the mood anymore. I wanted it to come out now.”
Sorkin revealed that Fincher was still closely involved in the project’s early stages, having received the script as soon as it was completed. “Fincher was the first person to read the script,” he said, adding that the director had been “a very enthusiastic support person.”
The two filmmakers previously collaborated on The Social Network, with Sorkin writing the screenplay and Fincher directing the 2010 film about Facebook’s origins. The new project therefore brings Sorkin back to the world of the social media giant, this time as its director.
The Social Reckoning explores Facebook Files
The Social Reckoning draws from the events behind The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 investigative series, The Facebook Files. The story follows Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, a young Facebook engineer who teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White.
Together, they embark on a risky journey that ultimately exposes some of the social network’s closely guarded secrets. Jeremy Strong stars as Mark Zuckerberg, while Sorkin takes over directing duties for the film. While Fincher will not be returning to direct, Sorkin’s decision to take charge of the film gives The Social Reckoning a directorial connection to The Social Network through the filmmaker who originally wrote its screenplay.
The Social Reckoning will release in theatres on October 9, 2026.
