Lionsgate and Meta have partnered to convert the upcoming film into 3D for cinemas, and it will play in 3D on Meta VR Glasses after its cinema run.
Lionsgate is working with Meta on a 3D conversion of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping for its theatrical release. The film, directed by Francis Lawrence, will also be available in 3D on Meta VR Glasses after its cinema run. This is Meta’s first partnership with a Hollywood studio to convert a movie into 3D.
The conversion was completed in collaboration with DNEG, the visual effects and animation studio. The film opens in theaters on Nov. 20, with its North American opening expected to bring in $60 million-$70 million. Additional Lionsgate feature titles for Meta VR Glasses, and their availability, will be announced later.
Meta VR Glasses are due to debut in spring 2027, and the film will play on them in 3D. Unveiled at Meta Connect 2026, the glasses feature a 5K Infinite Display, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio and Imax Enhanced. A pair weighs about 100 grams.
The Hunger Games films have grossed more than $3.3 billion at the global box office across five features. Lionsgate has also expanded the franchise with a stage production in London and a theme park attraction in Dubai.
- Meta has unveiled VR Glasses that are five times lighter than Meta Quest 3, support IMAX Enhanced and 3D films, and feature 5K displays, spatial audio, Meta AI, and gesture controls.
- Lionsgate is developing a sequel to Michael, the Michael Jackson biographical drama, with production potentially beginning in late 2026 and release plans extending into 2028.
