Martin Freeman is married!
The Hobbit star secretly tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, French writer and producer Rachel Benaissa. Freeman’s rep confirmed the news toEntertainment Weekly‘s sister site PEOPLE on Friday, and the outlet noted the pair’s wedding happened earlier this year.
The Sun was the first to report that the newlyweds were spotted wearing their respective wedding rings while attending a screening of Freeman’s new film, A Long Winter, during the BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Wednesday.
Benaissa also reportedly sported the sparkler on that finger at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Freeman and Benaissa have been dating since 2020. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe actor tends to keep details of his personal life private, Freeman did note on the Table Mannerspodcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware last year that he and Benaissa “like cooking.”
They are also cofounders of the independent film and television production company One Trick Poné.

Prior to marrying Benaissa, Freeman was in a long-term relationship with fellow Sherlock star Amanda Abbington for 16 years. The former couple met on the set of the British series Men Only in 2000 and were together until 2016.
They share two children, Joe, born in 2006, and Grace, born in 2008. Abbington has been engaged to stunt performer Jonathan Goodwin since 2021.

On the How to Fail With Elizabeth Daypodcast in January, Freeman reflected on relationships and admitted loneliness is a sign something is not working.
“What I do know about myself is that if you start to feel lonely in a relationship, or like, I’m on my own here somewhere in ways that you can’t explain or ways that you can’t sort of broach with your other half, it indicates something,” he shared, later adding of romantic partners, “That’s the other thing you forget. All the stuff that I’m feeling, so is she. She’s got this entire universe in her head that I am not literally part of.”
