    • William Gibson’s groundbreaking novel Neuromancer, which inspired the cyberpunk genre, is being adapted into an Apple TV show set to premiere on January 22, 2027.
    • The series follows protagonist Case, a skilled hacker, who teams up with the mysterious Molly to uncover the truth behind their dangerous mission involving an AI named Wintermute.
    • The teaser trailer for Neuromancer showcases a faithful adaptation with a solid cast, including Callum Turner as Case and Briana Middleton as Molly, promising an exciting journey into the world of cyberpunk.

These days, cyberpunk is more popular than ever before. We just got a new Ghost in the Shell anime series, for example, and Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuts in a little over two months. What younger fans of these franchises might not realize is that the entire cyberpunk genre owes its very existence to one man: William Gibson. Back in 1984, he wrote Neuromancer, the novel that has inspired nearly half a century of books, movies, shows, and more. Now, Neuromancer is being reinvented as an Apple TV show, and you can watch the first teaser trailer below.

    Welcome To Cyberspace

In Neuromancer, powerful corporations rule the world, and almost nothing is more valuable than information. Our protagonist is Case, a top-notch “console cowboy” who can no longer hack cyberspace due to an injury. He gets approached by a mysterious woman named Molly who makes an offer: she’ll help heal him as long as he helps her crew with a risky job. They grow wary of their employer, Armitage, and try to suss out the real nature of their mission. Eventually, they discover an AI named Wintermute that is programmed to join with its other half, Neuromancer. Making that happen, though, might just put the entire world at risk.

Judging from the teaser trailer, it looks like Apple TV’s Neuromancer will be a faithful adaptation. We also see Molly’s scary claws, demonstrating that she’s a technologically augmented razor girl. We also see Case demonstrating his fantastic hacking abilities. In early voiceover dialogue, Case asks, “What am I doing here?” A voice (presumably Armitage) responds, “Purpose. Purpose is everything. You’re scared. We all are.” Otherwise, the trailer is mostly an action montage: we see things like Peter Riviera’s flashy introduction and Molly having a Captain America-style elevator fight. The final visual is Case hacking into cyberspace.

Ain’t No Laws When You’re Slashing Claws

Based on what we know so far, Neuromancer has a solid cast. Callum Turner (best known for the Masters of the Air miniseries) is playing Case, while Briana Middleton (best known for Sharper) is playing Molly. Other notable members of the cast include Peter Sarsgaard as John Ashpool (the patriarch of a powerful corporate family who has recently awoken from cryogenic sleep) and Mark Menchaca as McCoy Pauley (one of Case’s old mentors). Finally, Mark Strong plays Armitage (Case and Molly’s brutal new boss), and Dane DeHaan plays Peter Riviera (a sociopath who projects holographic illusions).

Fans of the Neuromancer novel have a lot to look forward to with this upcoming series. Apple TV has a very solid track record of delivering killer sci-fi shows (like Severance, Silo, and For All Mankind), and it looks like they are adapting William Gibson’s mind-blowing world with style. Aesthetically, it bears surface-level similarities to The Matrix, which is only fitting; after all, the Wachowskis’ magnum opus was heavily inspired by the earlier novel. This may be apples to oranges, but from a visual standpoint, I found this trailer much more exciting than the one for Blade Runner 2099, the very muddy-looking upcoming series from rival streamer Amazon Prime Video.

Neuromancer is absolutely foundational to the cyberpunk genre and effectively influenced countless works of sci-fi over the decades. In fact, Gibson literally invented the word cyberspace, which became commonplace with the advent of the World Wide Web. Now this new series is hoping to do justice to the seminal novel and introduce a new generation of fans to the tale that started it all. Will this new series from Graham Roland and JD Dillard actually deliver the goods? You don’t have to hack cyberspace to find out. Just stream Neuromancer on Apple TV when it premieres on January 22, 2027.
