The art of watching without really watching
Once upon a time, watching a show meant giving it your undivided attention. Today, it could mean keeping something on while replying to emails, folding laundry or eating. The screen has become less a dedicated mode of entertainment and more a companion in the background. As streaming platforms have made content more accessible – and easier to dip in and out of – background watching has become part of everyday viewing habits.‘If it’s a really good drama or thriller, I want to give my full attention’The screen may be on, but our eyes aren’t always on it. With certain kinds of content, viewers can follow along largely through sound, almost turning a show or series into a podcast or radio programme playing in the background. Not everything, however, works as background viewing. A high-intensity crime thriller or a period drama demands the kind of attention that multitasking simply does not allow.“If it’s a really good drama, thriller or something with a complicated plot, I want to give it my full attention because I don’t want to miss details,” says Adyasha Mishra, 28, who works as a marketing professional.For many, familiar shows work best. Sahana, a writer in her 20s, describes background watching as something she consciously keeps on without expecting herself to follow every moment. “The difference between having Friends in the background and having Criminal UK in the background is that with Friends, I’ve seen the episodes so many times that I know what happened before and after. I don’t really need the context. But with Criminal UK, even if it is a rewatch, every dialogue and action on screen is important to the story,” she says.Suchita Srivastava, a psychologist, points out that comfort rewatching and background viewing may look similar but serve different purposes. “Comfort rewatching is deliberate. We choose a favourite episode to improve our mood. Background viewing, on the other hand, is more passive – we multitask while the show plays. While background shows serve functional needs such as routine, noise and companionship, rewatching familiar and easy-on-the-eyes shows can satisfy emotional needs such as nostalgia and self-soothing,” she says.‘Something playing in the background makes work and chores less boring’For many, background watching is less about entertainment and more about having another presence in the room. “Whenever I work from home, I need some background noise. It doesn’t specifically have to be a series; I put on a classic sitcom or Shark Tank because complete silence makes me feel like I am sitting alone in a room with my laptop,” says Danyal Akhtar, 32, a software engineer.
With reality shows, you can usually follow the general storyline through the conversations without constantly watching the screen. Stand-up is even easier because it’s mostly about listening — the visuals aren’t essential to understanding or enjoying the jokes

Adyasha shares a similar perspective. “I tend to put something light on while doing work, especially when I’m working from home or doing repetitive tasks. I deliberately choose something that doesn’t require my constant attention. Having something playing in the background makes working or doing chores less boring and makes the room feel less quiet,” she says.
Background media can also provide a sense of companionship and emotional regulation. Hearing human voices in the room can make someone feel less alone, particularly when they are living or working by themselves
