Gaming PCs can easily cost thousands of dollars, especially when you start adding high-end graphics cards and other performance-oriented components. But what if you could build a capable gaming rig for just $40? That’s what YouTuber LastComputer set out to do by repurposing an aging flagship Android smartphone. With a few hardware modifications and some clever software configuration, the creator turned an inexpensive secondhand phone into a fairly capable gaming machine.

The idea actually makes some sense when you consider how powerful flagship smartphones have become. Even models that are several years old have processors and GPUs that can handle demanding games, high-resolution video, and other computationally intensive tasks. Their resale values, however, tend to drop rapidly as newer models arrive. That makes older flagship phones an attractive option for anyone looking to build a gaming system on a shoestring budget.

LastComputer started by picking up a damaged Samsung Galaxy S23 smartphone on the secondhand market for just $40. Although the device is a few years old and has a heavily damaged screen and case, its processor and graphics hardware still have plenty of life left in them. After inspecting, cleaning, and testing the phone, the creator got to work transforming it into a dedicated gaming system.

One of the biggest challenges was keeping the hardware cool. Smartphones are designed to fit powerful components into extremely thin enclosures, leaving little room for effective heat dissipation. During extended gaming sessions, temperatures can climb high enough to trigger thermal throttling, which reduces performance to prevent overheating.

To deal with this problem, LastComputer improved the phone’s cooling system by replacing or supplementing its existing thermal interface materials and adding an external heatsink and fan to draw heat away from the processor. The additional cooling helps the processor and GPU to maintain higher performance levels during extended gaming sessions.

The next step was making the phone behave more like a conventional gaming computer than a phone. A USB-C hub provided connections for external peripherals, including a keyboard, mouse, and game controller. LastComputer also connected the device to an external monitor, which provides a desktop-style operating environment with the help of Samsung DeX.

On the software side, LastComputer optimized Android for gaming by reducing unnecessary background activity and configuring emulators and other gaming applications. This opened the door to playing native Android titles alongside games originally designed for other platforms.

The completed system was then put through its paces with a variety of games and emulators. While an aging smartphone isn’t going to compete with a modern gaming PC equipped with a dedicated graphics card, the results show just how much performance can be squeezed out of inexpensive secondhand hardware.

For anyone with an old flagship phone collecting dust in a drawer, this project demonstrates one way it can be put back to good use. With the price of computer components climbing to ridiculous levels, now could be the right time to repurpose a forgotten smartphone as a gaming machine.
