If you’ve been on social media recently, you might have noticed a new initiative gaining traction. It’s a spot of planned action against Sony’s recent decision to scrap physical games come January 2028, and it’s manifesting in the form of a hashtag: #PSBlackout.
PlayStation’s current landscape has become a tale of two extremes. Each new announcement is met with equal parts excitement for upcoming projects and outrage from fans still reeling from the company’s decision to phase out physical media.
PlayStation Network status became a major concern on July 24, 2026, when a broad outage disrupted account access, online gaming, the PlayStation Store and other network-dependent features. The incident lasted for roughly eight hours before most services returned, according to Game Informer’s live outage report, which tracked Sony’s official service indicators during the disruption.
It may still be a little early, but following the announcement that the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will shut down, the prices of games for those systems appear to be rising sharply, with some titles seeing particularly dramatic increases.
Earlier today, a massive PlayStation Network outage took services offline for thousandsof gamers worldwide, leaving them unable to sign into their accounts. Per reports on social media, this impacted the PlayStation Store, downloaded games, and any games that require a PlayStation Network connection.
