Filmmaker Chloé Zhao still believes in superhero movies, even as the genre has come down from its box office dominance of previous years. Speaking at a masterclass event during the Venice Film Festival, the “Eternals” director emphasized that comic book adaptations shouldn’t be dismissed.

Chloé Zhao has directed an Oscar-winning drama about nomads living out of their vehicles, a Shakespearean family drama, and a massive Marvel superhero movie. So when someone suggested that Nomadland and Eternals represented opposite ends of the filmmaking spectrum, Zhao replied that she saw no contrast.

“It’s important to not write off stories because we don’t consider them high art,” Zhao remarked
