Star Trek: The Next Generation began airing on September 28, 1987, with Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Getting the show to television took two unusual choices: Paramount went around the major networks, and creator Gene Roddenberry agreed to cast an actor he had first rejected.
