‘Sweet Magnolias’ Cancellation: Creator, Stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher and Jamie Lynn Spears React to Netflix Series Ending

Following the news that “Sweet Magnolias” has been canceled at Netflix, stars Jamie Lynn Spears, JoAnna Garcia Swisher and creator and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson are looking back on the romantic drama’s 5 Season run.

Under an Instagram post featuring behind-the-scenes and on-set snaps of the show, Swisher wrote alengthy captionabout her feelings surrounding the show’s ending.

“How do you say goodbye to something that became so much more than a job? Seven years. Five seasons. A million tiny moments that somehow became a whole life,” she began. “‘Sweet Magnolias’ came into my world during a chapter that held some of my deepest loss and, somehow, some of my greatest joy. I lost both of my parents during those early seasons, and in a time when I wasn’t always sure how to keep moving forward, Serenity gave me somewhere to go. These people gave me somewhere to belong.”

She continued: “To every single person who made this show, and every single person who watched it, loved it, shared it, and found a little piece of themselves in Serenity…thank you. You will never fully know what you gave me.”

Jamie Lynn Spears, who played Noreen Fitzgibbons in the show, wrote on Instgram that she “can’t put into words how much the people who make up our Sweet Mags family mean to me, and that’s not just the producers, cast, crew, & @Netflix who are like actual family at this point, but also each of you who watched and became a part of our family as well.”

“I was given the gift of being able to provide for my family, doing something I was proud of, surrounded by people I respected and loved while creating something we all valued,” she concluded. “I owe it all to each and every person who loved Serenity, and the people who made it what it was, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, I’m so grateful to be a part of this magical family and that’s something that will never end🤍🤍”

Anderson also shared her reflections in an Instagram post Saturday. “Living in Serenity for five seasons has been a privilege and a blessing,” she wrote. “The people I’ve met and worked with — our incredible writers, cast, crew, executives, and producers — have touched my heart and changed my life.”

“And our fans have been amazing in their passion for our characters. Thank you all. Though our journey has sadly come to an end, I hope Serenity will always have a place in your heart. Keep pouring it out!”

The Netflix show first premiered on the platform in May 2020, and starred Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley. Originally adapted from the book series by New York Times best-selling author Sherryl Woods, the streamer announced that the show continuously ranked among Netflix’s Global Top 10 in over 60 countries after announcing its return for a fifth season in 2025.

The “comfort drama,” as described by Netflix, followed the lifelong friendship between Maddie (Swisher), Dana Sue (Elliott), and Helen (Headley) “as they juggle relationships, family and careers in the charming small town of Serenity, S.C.”

Though “Sweet Magnolias” may be coming to an end, Netflix announced that Swisher and Anderson would be teaming for a new drama series titled “Ladies of the House.”

Variety previously reportedthat Anderson will serve as showrunner, with Swisher potentially starring and executive producing with Kate Gordon under their Rolling Clover banner, alongside executive producers at Black Label Media.

The logline reads, “When the charismatic owner of a winery dies unexpectedly, his wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other.”
