The gang finds themselves in the world of comic books in the season’s penultimate episode

A familiar feeling came over me when I watched this episode. It’s the same feeling I have when the playoffs reaches that last round before the championship, that amazing feeling when you know that an epic ending is coming. We have seen so many twists and turns so far in this latest addition to The Big Bang Theoryuniverse, and we are almost at the end of this show’s inaugural season.
But much like in sports, before we get to the crowning moment, we have to discuss the very thing that sets this up.
So of course, our heroes are in the comic book, apparently stuck on the cover, until Bert disappears. Turns out, Bert left the cover and went inside the comic, which has everything a superhero story has–tall buildings, busy traffic, you name it. Stuart is elated and confident, because this is his wheelhouse.
“Who here knows more about comics than Stuart David Bloom?’
Among the many comic book tidbits that were mentioned: Metropolis is in Delaware. WOW! The 1st State, Joe Biden, Elisabeth Shue, and Superman. Epic. As Stuart says, they need to find The Flash, so they decide to fly to Central City, and after seeing Ramona Nowitzki as an airport employee (seriously, the way the show inserts Ramona into everything is so awesome), we see Kyle and Trevor back in the comic book shop, with the latter reading the comic that the gang trapped in. This does not please The Adversary, who kills Trevor and actually sends Mr. Freeze–a Batman villain–after the group.
In Central City, the group hails a cab, which is driven by Gary, who ejects them for taking too long. It’s at this moment that Mr. Freeze appears and kills Gary (again, the Kenny McCormick of the show; prove me wrong) and goes after the quartet, only for the “Golden Age” version of The Flash (Jay Garrick) to save the group. The scene shifts to an underground parking lot, where the best moment of the episode occurs. Flash and Freeze battle it out, but that’s not what stands out to me. The stand out moment is Stuart Bloom channeling his inner Bob Cole and giving the play-by-play.
I really loved this. Stuart was truly in his element, he was in something that he was an expert in. It would be like me in a hockey environment, hence the reference to the late, great Bob Cole. And the way Stuart was giving the play-by-play reminded me a lot of Cole and others like John Forslund, Chris Cuthbert, and of course, Marc Moser. It was just amazing to witness.
So after that battle, the gang headed to Garrick’s home, as they needed to use the Cosmic Treadmill to get back to their own universe. As they ring the doorbell, they are encountered by:
Amy Farrah Fowler, who is actually Garrick’s wife in this. So we get a second alternate Amy just over a month after we saw her as a psychotherapist, and after the couple is briefed on the various universes that the group has been in, Garrick takes them to the Cosmic Treadmill, but Freeze shows up and attempts to do in Stuart again, but they manage to escape. The gang is dropped off at the comic book shop, where they encounter Kyle, who tells them about The Adversary. Kripke’s attempt to leave is halted by the shocking discovery that they are floating away into a void. Well, that and a laugh track is heard after Stuart says they’re not in Pasadena.
And that sets up the season finale.
“Spoiler: We Couldn’t Get Green Lantern,” the penultimate episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe‘s first season, hit HBO Max on September 17, 2026. This was another short and very sweet episode that did the job it was supposed to do: set up the finale. It was very epic seeing Eric Allan Kramer as Mr. Freeze; Kramer is, perhaps, best known for his role as Dave Rogers on The Hughleys. Fun fact: both Kramer and his TV wife on The Hughleys,Marietta DePrima, appeared in episodes of Lois & Clark, wth DePrima playing a villainess in her appearance.
Speaking of the subject of villainesses, yes, you guessed it. I was hoping Amy would be one in this. With the setting being a superhero comic, I kinda expected a scene where Amy secretly meets with The Adversary, which could reveal her villainous alliance and her plans against not only the quartet, but also her own betrothed. And for an added comedic bonus, maybe Amy could have been having an affair with a supervillain, IDK.
Despite that blown opportunity, the episode was amazing as hell, and now, it’s nine episodes down and one more to go this season. I don’t know what to expect in the season finale, but I know it’ll be big, it’ll be epic, and it will truly be memorable!
