South Korea Confirms Hosting K-pop Festival Fanomenon in 2027

The 2027 launch will test South Korea’s new model for global music festivals, with a potential global edition planned for 2028 in LA.

    Highlights

    • South Korea’s biggest K-pop companies are joining forces to launch “Fanomenon,” a new music festival built around fandom culture.
    • The 11-day event aims to draw more than half a million attendees while blending concerts, fan experiences, and other K-culture industries.
    • Both the public and the private sectors are laying out broader plans to turn the K-pop fandom and the festival into a long-term tourism and cultural export.

South Korea is all set to launch an 11-day festival centered around K-pop fandoms called “Fanomenon,” running December 2 to December 12, 2027, across venues in Seoul and Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The announcement was made by a state-private committee on July 27, 2026. Organizers reportedly expect the festival to bring in 520,000 attendees, including a projected 200,000 international visitors. Additionally, they estimate an economic impact of roughly ₩1 trillion (~ $680 million USD).

The festival is supported by the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, which is co-chaired by Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young and JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin-young. Notably, the “Big Four” of the K-pop industry,  HYBE, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment will come together as well for this project.

In April, these companies filed a business combination report with the South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) to establish this venture. The event will be modeled after Coachella and Lollapalooza, with organizers intending to take the format overseas. According to reports, the first international edition of the festival “Fanomenon”is planned for Los Angeles, which could potentially be scheduled for a May 2028 launch.

A Music Festival Built Around Fandom

The name of the festival uses “fan” and “phenomenon.” As organizers said it showcases how fans actively spread Korean culture instead of just simply consuming it. This idea is also core of an awards show, which will take place at the festival, where artists will accept honors on behalf of the year’s 10 most influential K-pop fan communities

The programming will split across two sites. These include Seoul Arena, a 28,000-seat venue, which is under construction in Changdong, northern Seoul, and is scheduled for completion in May 2027. The arena will allegedly host concerts on six days across two weekends, with the fandom awards set to be staged in between sets on Saturday and Sunday. Additionally, a midsize hall at the same complex will relay the main stage live, while the adjoining convention space will hold a showcase of nominees and fan events.

Also at Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX), the country’s largest exhibition and convention venue located in Goyang, will hold a music festival for roughly 20,000 attendees on weekends, in two of its halls. The lineup for the festival will expand beyond K-pop, including genres like jazz, EDM, rock, R&B, hip-hop, world music and traditional Korean genres. The halls will also host fan meetings, production presentations, screenings, esports tournaments, soundtrack concerts and industry business forums. Plus three additional KINTEX halls will depict exhibitions and hands-on programming from Korean food, beauty, fashion, gaming, webtoon, film and animation companies.

Why South Korea Is Betting Big on Fanomenon

To illustrate the festival’s potential impact, the committee cited two major events. One, Coachella, which drew about 250,000 people over six days in 2025 and, together with the Stagecoach festival, created nearly about $700M for California. While BTS’ March comeback concert at Gwanghwamun, brought in an estimated 104,000 attendees in a single day, with Bloomberg valued its economic impact at $177M.

Park Jinyoung, the co-Chairman of the festival and the founder and chief creative officer of JYP Entertainment, said that the festival aims to leverage the “true power of K-culture” which “stems not just from the artists and content, but from the fandoms that have nurtured and spread it worldwide,” as noted by The Korea Times. Park Jinyoung also added that the ticketing and sponsorship will follow a self-sustaining model which intends to make the festival profitable. He argued that economic viability is essential to attracting global artists and entertainment companies.

To achieve the same, the festival will have equal contributions from public and private sectors alike. The private companies will notably lead programming, production and promotion, while the government will back the smaller K-culture businesses, tourism initiatives and logistics such as immigration and safety.

As noted by The Korea Times, Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young said: “Our primary goal is to make it an event that people around the world want to attend, while earning the trust of the global entertainment industry.” Officials are also reportedly considering aligning the Korea Grand Sale with the festival to grow its tourism and retail appeal.

Is Fanomenon More than Just a Music Festival?

Apart from the festival itself, the committee has planned a wider set of initiatives like a hotline for K-culture companies to raise issues involving customs, certification and cross-border movement of staff and goods. The initiative has been piloted since April and is set to run in full, from 2027. The committee is also backing privately led “K-culture centers” abroad. The proposed hubs would include 20,000-seat performance venues, government offices and exhibition space for Korean companies, while also building programs aimed at fostering intellectual property collaborations across genres and industries.
