Sony has recently raised prices across its gaming business and decided to move away from physical game discs.

Despite these changes, the company says PlayStation remains an affordable and attractive choice for players.

During a recent meeting with investors, Goldman Sachs senior analyst Minami Hase asked whether ending disc production could hurt PlayStation by making the console too similar to gaming PCs, a platform that has already moved away from physical media.

PlayStation Is Still More Affordable Than Gaming PCs, According to Sony

Sony CFO Lin Tao replied that physical discs have never been the main factor separating PlayStation consoles from gaming PCs.

Instead, she said PlayStation stands out because of its carefully selected games and content, the stability of its gaming environment, and its more affordable price compared to high-end gaming PCs.

Tao explained, “We don’t feel that the disc is the factor to differentiate from the PC. For PC, there’s certain ways to play with the PC as an user. It’s a long tail. Our strength is that the curated contents, that’s one of our strength.”

“The game environment being stable, that’s another strength. Compared to the high-end gaming PC, our product is more affordable. We don’t feel that the disc itself is a strong factor for differentiation. Going forward, we can coexist peacefully with PC games,” she added.

Even though high-end gaming PCs are expected to become more expensive due to memory shortages and rising hardware costs, that does not necessarily mean Sony’s next console is safe.

It’s likely that the PlayStation 6 will be priced at over $900, considering the PS5 Pro now costs $900 and the memory shortage does not appear to be ending anytime soon. If that happens, it could make Sony’s next-generation console too expensive for many gamers.

However, it’s worth noting that, Sony has confirmed that it has not yet decided on the PlayStation 6’s price or release date.
