Sony May Partner With Japanese Govt. for a Global Manga Platform

Dr. Stone artist Boichi says industrymanga distribution project

    Highlights

    • Dr. Stone artist Boichi claims industry sources indicate Sony is the leading candidate to operate Japan’s planned global manga platform.
    • The proposed platform aligns with METI’s strategy to strengthen overseas manga distribution.
    • If selected, Sony could leverage its existing ecosystem to support Japan’s long-term goal of expanding its manga footprint globally.

Sony is reportedly the frontrunner to build Japan’s planned global manga distribution platform, according to a July 28 X post from Dr. Stone artist Boichi. Neither Sony nor the Japanese government has confirmed the claim, and Boichi himself cautioned that it is

Boichi said the information came from multiplecompany expected to lead this project.” The project here is a domestic manga platform, which would distribute titles globally

In November 2025, the Japanese government announced that it would develop a domestic platform to distribute manga internationally through one official channel. However, no partners were named at that time, except for mentioning that the government expected a domestic company to take charge.

Since Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has not named a lead operator, Boichi’s post gained attention as the most specific claim yet about who might run Japan’s official manga platform. Bochi also argued that no company has yet built a true global manga platform on the scale of streaming services like Crunchyroll or Netflix.

However, the post did not include further details on the project’s structure, launch window, or participating publishers. Bochi tied the claim to Sony’s existing footprint in manga and anime, including its ownership of Crunchyroll, along with its position as a major shareholder in KADOKAWA.

What Lies Behind the Domestic Global Manga Platform Push

The reported initiative closely mirrors Japan’s recent policies to strengthen overseas distribution of manga, anime, and other entertainment IP. During the announcement of a global manga platform, METI cited that in 2022, manga sold roughly ¥320 billion (~$2.03 billion USD) overseas, whereas Japanese publishers and creators received only about ¥25.6B (~$162.6M) of that in licensing revenue.

Plus, there’s an increasing loss in the manga industry due topiracy
, which has resulted in a staggering deficit of ¥2.6T (~$17.0B) between 2022 and 2025 in the country’s publishing sector.   Losses are estimated to be near ¥2T (~$12.7B) between 2020 and 2023.

That mounting loss and lesser revenue pushed the government toward building its own channel rather than relying on fragmented licensing deals. Japan’s government stated at that time that it would allocate ¥17.5B (~$111.15M) extra for the manga platform in its Creator Support Fund, which will fund it.

The government also flagged the lack of a global manga distribution channel at that time. Manga distribution today is split across several platforms, including Viz Media’s Shonen Jump app, Shueisha’s Manga Plus, and third-party aggregators, none of which function as a single global hub.

Why Sony Fits in This Vision

Even though the report is not confirmed, Sony would be a logical partner if such a platform materializes. The company has already proven its role in expanding overseas distribution for Japanese entertainment properties through services like Crunchyroll (anime), Sony Pictures (cinema), and licensing partnerships.

Crunchyrollhas a dedicated manga segment, which started in 2025. Apart from that, Sony also launched Comic Rolly in 2023, for manga and webtoon, which is set to merge with Sony’s Reader’s Store.

Sony also remains one of Japan’s leading entertainment conglomerates with a global footprint across most successful manga markets outside Japan, including India, the U.S., and France. A dedicated manga platform would complement Sony’s existing anime/manga adjacent portfolio while strengthening the pipeline that feeds manga into anime, games, and other media adaptations.

Whether the reported project ultimately takes shape remains to be seen. Still, it aligns with Japan’s long-term ambition to transform manga into the foundation of a broader global IP ecosystem. With METI’s target of  ¥20T (~ $125.13B) in overseas content exportsby 2033, manga remains one of the most valuable cultural exports, with a target of  ¥1T (~$6.35B) in exports, marking 233% growth.
