Bonnetts Energy Centre — Grande Con AI-Art Policy Example

Fighting-game esports star SonicFox has backed out of NEXCON 2026, a two-day convention set for Norman, Oklahoma, after objecting to promotional artwork they say used an AI-generated version of their likeness. SonicFox announced the contract covering their appearance as a special guest had been terminated, and said their enthusiasm for the show had evaporated entirely.
The dispute surfaced when X user Z2WJustin tagged SonicFox and fellow guest Kara Edwards in a post flagging that the Norman venue appeared to be using AI to promote SonicFox’s appearance, according to <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/esports-star-sonicfox-pulls-out-of-gaming-event-over-ai-generated-art-3420709/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Dexerto. SonicFox responded directly to that claim, writing, “I absolutely refuse to have my likeness be AI generated and my interest in attending as a special guest has dropped to 0.” A day later, SonicFox confirmed the fallout in blunt terms: “Update: Contract terminated and no longer attending!”
NEXCON 2026 is scheduled for November 14 and 15 at the Cleveland County Event Center, with organizers anticipating roughly 1,000 to 1,500 attendees across the weekend, according to the event’s listing on Eventeny. The convention’s planned programming spans video-game tournaments, casual gaming, an Artist Alley, cosplay, vendors, panels, community meetups and playable showcases from Ninjutsu Entertainment. General admission is listed between $40 and $70 plus applicable fees and taxes, and tickets are described as non-refundable except where required by law or if organizers cancel the event outright.
Guest List Still Shows SonicFox Listed
Despite the termination, SonicFox remained listed as a special guest on the NEXCON 2026 website at the time Dexerto’s report published, alongside Dragon Ball voice actor Kara Edwards, who was also advertised as a special guest for the weekend. The article notes that Edwards had not commented on the flyer or its contents. Dexerto said it had reached out to event organizer Ninjutsu Entertainment for comment on the situation.
In a follow-up post, Z2WJustin reported that NEXCON organizers had reached out and were working with real artists to replace the disputed material, and said the organizers were also trying to ban AI art from their platform entirely. Those details, like the rest of the back-and-forth, come from Z2WJustin’s own account of the exchange rather than a direct statement from the convention.
A Wider Reckoning Over AI Art at Conventions
SonicFox’s exit lands amid a broader pushback against AI-generated promotional art across gaming and music events. In Western Canada, Grande Con’s organizers have made banning the sale of AI-generated artwork the standard across all four annual expos the organizer helps host, according to CBC. Vendors there must sign a waiver confirming their work isn’t AI-generated, and every booth gets inspected before doors open. Organizers framed the policy as a way to protect and empower the artists who sell work at the show, saying, “We want to be in a position always to protect and empower them.”
The same tension has rippled through Canada’s music venues. Toronto’s Ground Control banned AI artwork for event promotions in June, with owner Lloyd Warren saying he won’t book acts that insist on using AI flyers, a separate CBC report found. In Halifax, the 60-year-old Gus’ Pub and Grill announced in August it would no longer share AI-generated posters or flyers online or on-site, part of what CBC describes as a pattern spreading beyond a single venue.
Not every convention has managed to stick the landing on its own anti-AI rules. The UK Games Expo issued a formal apology after publishing promotional artwork containing AI-assisted elements despite having its own generative-AI ban in place The expo said the slip traced back to a filter embedded in its design software that the designer hadn’t intended to use, and it pledged to audit its internal workflow to strip out automated filter tools from future campaigns
For now, the NEXCON 2026 guest lineup still shows SonicFox’s name, even as the fighting-game star insists the deal is dead. Whether organizers update the listing, or how the rest of the November weekend’s programming is affected, remains to be seen.
