In what may well be the biggest comic book-related news to come out of NYCC 2026, IDW Publishing has acquired the rights to publish new James Bond adventures. The company is turning to none other than legendary New X-Men and Doom Patrol writer Grant Morrison to launch a new ongoing James Bond series.
Few other details are known about the series right now, including the artist, official title, or release date. However, Morrison’s name alone is ample cause for excitement.
We do know that Morrison’s series will kick off with a six-part storyline dubbed “Sunbreaker.” The writer teased their plans for the series in the following statement:
I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember and this opportunity to put my own stamp on a British character as iconic as King Arthur, Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes, was too good to miss.
Our opening 6-part adventure, Sunbreaker, attempts to create a definitive Bond story featuring everything fans love about the character and his world, while adding a whole lot more. Expect to see James Bond in a few unfamiliar situations, facing unfamiliar foes, in a world very like our own as reflected in a deadly funhouse mirror – a world of intrigue, violence, double cross and deception. A world through which James Bond glides like a killer shark among minnows. Charismatic, ruthless, unstoppable.
With new cars, new gadgets, and a terrifying new ultimate villain ripped straight from the headlines, get ready to be shaken and stirred, as James Bond faces the greatest challenge of his life in Sunbreaker!
This series marks the beginning of IDW’s collaboration with Ian Fleming Publications Ltd. The James Bond license has found a home at several publishers over the decades, most recently at Dynamite Entertainment. You can check outIGN’s review of 2015’s James Bond #1 for more on that series.
In other news, we got an exclusive first look at Mattel’s first DC Premium figure, and we also got hands-on time with the new Marvel Webtoon app.
