Seth Rogen and wife Lauren Miller Rogen explored a fresh dynamic in their marriage while filming the new movie Babies together with Oscar-nominated actress Anna Kendrick.
The couple reacted on stage Saturday to a question about Lauren directing the passionate love scenes her husband shared with Kendrick in the comedy-drama, which follows a set of childless spouses (Kendrick, Seth) deciding whether or not they want to have kids as they watch their friends (Issa Rae, Dan Stevens, Kate Berlant, Zach Cherry) raise young families.
“She seemed pretty into it, honestly,” Seth told the Toronto International Film Festival audience as they laughed, while Lauren, whom he married in 2011, added that it didn’t faze her because her husband has “made out with so many beautiful women” that it felt like “just another one on the list” for him.
Seth joked that “many beautiful women have been paid handsomely to make out with me,” while Lauren said that the vibe on set among others felt apprehensive before she shot scenes of Kendrick kissing her husband.
“Everyone was like, ‘They’re going to do a kissing scene. Is Lauren going to be weird?'” with Kendrick quickly cutting in to exclaim, “Lauren was like, ‘Get in there!'” on the day.
“I was like, ‘Can you get closer? Closer, touch her back!'” Lauren remembered, adding that she even shouted, “Touch all of her body” to her husband in the scene.
“I remember very early on, the three of us were looking at each other like, it feels like, they’re a married couple, they would have a little kiss or whatever,” Kendrick said of the scenes as they were originally planned, which she said didn’t include much kissing. “I was the first one to be like, ‘Should we smooch? I feel like we should smooch!'”
Babies received a warm welcome from the audience at its TIFF premiere, with a sustained ovation as the credits rolled.
Seth said he shared the audience’s appreciation for the film, having watched it for the first time in the theater alongside them.

“Watching it, I think it’s part of the plot of the movie. We love each other and we’re affectionate with each other, and it’s not part of the reason why we don’t want kids,” Rogen said of the love scenes.
He added: “I think that’s so smart of how Lauren structured the film and it’s reflective of our real lives. There’s not always an obvious reason why you don’t want to make the choice to have kids. You could have financial stability and a partner you love. You could love kids and a responsible person who knows they’d be a good parent, and still not want to have kids. I think that’s something Lauren expressed so well and exactly how I feel. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie say that before, and it was so remarkable to be part of.”
