In a new report from ZDNET Korea, the outlet claims that Nintendo is considering an OLED screen revision for Switch 2
That may seem like a surprising rumor given the state of the industry and the cost for component prices currently. ZDNET Korea says Nintendo has been looking to lower manufacturing costs, yet OLED panels are higher than LCDs in that area. It’s unclear if the company would actually move forward with this sort of revision, but at the very least, it sounds like there’s no rush to get something out the door
That said, ZDNET Korea claims that it spoke with multiple insiders who said a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED model is being considered, but has not been finalized. One such person said development at the end of the year is possible, with mass production potentially kicking off at the end of 2027 or the start of 2028
A machine translation of their comments is as follows:
“Nintendo is considering releasing a Switch 2 OLED with the resolution upgraded from HD (1280×720) of the Switch 1 OLED model to FHD (1920×1080). If the release of the Switch 2 OLED model is decided, there is a possibility that product development will begin at the end of this year.”
“Nintendo is considering applying rigid OLED to the Switch 2, but has not yet confirmed the release of the Switch 2 OLED due to the price difference compared to liquid crystal display (LCD) products
“Samsung Display will strive to supply Switch 2 OLEDs to Nintendo, [but] the extent of the price increase for the Switch 2 resulting from the application of OLED is a variable.”
This follows a recent discovering of evidence pointing to a potential new LCD screen for Nintendo Switch 2. We have more on that here
ZDNET Korea has done some accurate reporting for tech news in the past. However, today’s claims should be taken with a grain of salt
If we do eventually see a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED, it’d be an upgrade over the current screen. Would that alone be enough to entice you to grab a system revision? Let us know in the comments.
